You need to list specific applications, since AMD scores better on some and P4 scores better on others.

Also, for P4 shouldn't you be getting 3.2 GHz not that it's priced at what a 3.0 was last month?

And, for PhotoShop for example, memory is more important than the last speed bump, so a 3.0 + 2 GB RAM would be better for you than a 3.2 + 1GB.

And, if what you're doing is disk-bound, such as video editiong (rather than just enocding) then disk speed becomes much more important.

Finally, any budget constraints?

not sure on budget yet..... she can afford anything we can think of... i mean that.
but shes not wasteful, all she does is the normal stuff, email, word processing, quicken, maybe a video clip, no games, music, etc. she is impatient though. when she wants it to run now, she means right now.

actually I will be putting more time into the out side look of the system than the inside.

Well, someone already made the suggestion, so I will second it:

Get her a Barton (2800+ suggested), a NForce 2 mobo and a raptor hard drive for responsiveness with the biggest LCDmonitor she can have..... Oh, I am assuning you already have broadband.... it is funny how sometimes my wife complains that the computer is slow because the websites take long to load...... 😉

Alex

my wife does the same thing 🙂
I hear you guys but this is a case also where I don't want to price myself too low, I know I can always jack the price up but I don't do that. if you noice I didn't get the absolute highest end stuff. if I go lower it would be to an intel solution maybe a 2.6C but no lower.

You don't have to..... I wouldn't consider a 2800+ or 3000+ as "low", we are just trying to pick whatever will fit her best. For her usage, the Athlon is the best pick in both price and performance, couple that CPU with an NForce2 mobo, a raptor drive and the large LCd monitor PLUS the T3 connection and she will be happy 🙂

If you really want to go higher, I would suggest the Athlon 64..... but a Barton 3000+ is by no means "slow".

I am upgrading my wife's machine also, and the only thing she really needs is fiber optic connectivity..... 😉

If your wife is also like mine, she can't stand noisy computers, so you may be better tryign to get better cooling to make the machine silent..... 😉
