THIS IS MY Q?
I AM PUTTING A PC TOGETHER AND THESE ARE THE PARTS SO FAR:
P4 3.4G LGA 775 CPU
ASUS P5P800 MOTHERBOARD
ATI RADEON 9600PRO 256MB
2X 1GB PC3200
NOW ...I HAVE NOT IDEA WHAT HD TO USE...IDE..ATA...OR SATA AS YOU CAN SEE I DONT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM....I HEARD THAT SATA DRIVES HAVE A FEW PROBLEMS WHEN YOU INSTALL THEM OR INSTALL WINXP...CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? WHAT PERFORMANCE WOULD I GET OUT OF A SATA DRIVE THAT I CANNOT GET OF A IDE?

Anyway, I was thinking:

1) Athlon64 = better gaming CPU

2) more video card would be good

3) ATA/100 or ATA/133, also known as PATA ("Parallel ATA"), would be the guaranteed simplest for a new builder

SATA isn't terribly hard.. especially if you ask people around here how to use it with a new install of windows. press f6.. have a disk basically.. not rocket science.

With a P5P800, it could be a little trickier than that in some scenarios Enhanced mode, legacy mode, RAID on, RAID disabled... oh yes Precious. Here's a snip of the rigamarole from an analogous Abit:

but where i think the main problem was - was in the bios settings - here are the settings that worked for me (this one is without raid - im waiting on a second disk to set up the raid):

note - these are from memory (and from your other thread) - i dont have the box in front of me atm:

Under Integrated Peripherals -> OnChip IDE Device:
IDE Bus Master - Enabled
OnChip Serial ATA - enhanced
OnChip Serial ATA Mode - ide
SATA RAID ROM - Enabled

Advanced BIOS Features:
Hard Disk Boot Priority - 1. Bootable Add-in Device
Bootable Add-in Device - Onboard sata
Boot Other Device - Enabled

Fun. I think the Asus will work with out-of-the-box settings if he gets the cable on the right plug, and uses the right driver floppy (if it needs one), but PATA is the safe bet for a newbie.

yes i have...i am very technical...i am a fire alarm tech and i use tools like screw drivers,cutters and voltimeter all day long.i am not planning of using the pc for gaming..it is just for internet ,ebay,picture storage,etc.but i really want a relative fast pc without expending a lot of money.so is the ata133 connection just like a regular ide drive?

Hi.

This is my question.
I am putting a pc together and these are the parts so far:

[*]P4 3.4G LGA 775 CPU
[*]ASUS P5P800 MOTHERBOARD

[*]1GB (2x) PC3200

Now I have no idea what HD to use...

IDE ATA or SATA, as you can see and I don't know the difference between them.
I heard that SATA drives have a few problems when you install them.
Can anyone explain this to me?
Would the performance be worth it to upgrade to SATA?
