Hi all,

I have an old dell vostro 200st (same as inspiron 530s) that is probably at least 6-7 years old. The system still does the job for me as I only really use it for browsing and xbmc but the noise from the stock cooler is getting a bit too loud for me.

I was suggested this heatsink but read that push pin mounting isn't always ideal? Also read that dell uses a special type of connection for their fans? Could someone please suggest any quiet heatsinks that will fit please. It's a socket 775 mobo.

Thanks

Dell computer are very quiet.
Is the bearing on the fan worn out? What kind of noise are you hearing?

Dell's often (always?) use a combination case fan / CPU fan with duct. Your fan is probably just worn out. You really don't need a whole new heatsink/fan.

You can try cleaning the dust off the fan to see if that quiets it down. Dust can cause the fan to be unbalanced, and make noise or fail. If that doesn't help, just measure the fan and and look at the wiring and plug, then find a replacement of the same size with a similar plug and a long enough wire.

The dells that I've worked with had propietory fans. They had 5 pins

If it's just the fan bearings wearing out, I can usually breathe more life into one by peeling back a label to expose the bearings, and add one or two drops of sewing machine oil. It's a clear, fairly gentle oil; my understanding is that 3-in-1 oil can be a little harsh for this application.

You should relube fans every 6-12 months. It's pretty easy to do, just take off the fan, there should be a sticker on the back, remove it, pull out the plug for the fan well, put a *single* drop of mineral oil in there. It'll lube itself. Machine oil works too, gun oil, any oil really.

Every fan will get louder after ~4 months, you'd be surprised that even brand new fans often will sound much louder in such a short period of time but you wouldn't notice since it's a gradual increase (until you relube it).

There's no reason that fan should be dead or the bearings worn out yet. The connection is just 4pin but there's nothing special about it.
