New HDD in IBM R50 laptop...

I once read that when replacing the HDD in IBM laptops, you have to select specific brands (IIRC IBM or toshiba drives were acceptable) to avoid an error at POST. I know that this error is not a real error, just a way of getting you to buy specific brands, but as the laptop is my girl friends, I want it to be as trouble free as possible.

So.... which brands do I select?

As an additional question: A copy of WinXP Pro is installed on the original HDD with an image to allow for a return to the original installation if needed. Is it possible to burn this to a CD? Will it be possible to "ghost" the original HDD to the new one and then return the factory install image?

Thanks in advance

Is this for an upgrade or a completely dead hard drive? Those laptops have shock mounted hard drives. I am not sure whether this is best to have replaced by a manufacturer or not. Is it not under warranty?

As to whether or not an image can be burned, you can "ghost" the HDD and return it to it's original state. You can use Ghost, and I believe Acronis True Image(?).
