NEW HD and problems

Okay I received a Western Digital WD1600JS as a gift. After getting the drive, it was up and running pretty well with no problems. However, I did notice something peculiar about it. When I was copying over 40GB worth of files from my old HD to my new HD, Windows XP suddenly freezed. Thinking it was most likely a cause of high temperature in the case, I decided to move the HD up from the bottom drive cage of my p180 away from my RAPTOR. Temperatures I measured using systool were fine for both drives. Today, I was using CLONEDVD to copy one of my dvds onto my computer, storing it on the new HD and windows again froze in the middle of the cloning process. I retried this 3 times and all 3 times windows froze. Thinking it was temperature again, I put all my fans on full blast with one fan directly blowing on the new HD. Rebooted. Started cloning again and again xp froze.

I have no clue what's going on. Is my HD bad or could it be my PSU or is it something else?

Other things to consider include the following: my HD is connected via sata to my a8r32mvp mobo. The WD1600js is connected to the psu via a sata to normal power connector. However, the power connector is being shared by my two cd/dvd burners...

Another issue that I've been having is that my antec 500w sp2 psu has been making a slight whine. I don't have the cash right now to replace my psu but I thought that could somehow be of a reason for the strange HD response.

Yet another thing I've noticed is that my HD makes a sound when starting up. Like a sudden loud CLICK.

System specs are the following:

Opteron 165 o/ced stable to 2.47ghz
2gb ram
ASUS a8r32-mvp mobo
Antec SP2 500w PSU
7900gt
WD740gd raptor
NEW HD - WD 1600JS

hey there most likely the whine is a fan going bad in the psu and as for the hdd problems I would suspect something is broken in windows might be a currupt driver or a conflict somewhere.
Next time this problem occurs go to the task manager and end all non essential processes.
Lots of times a driver or some type of software conflict willcreate the freezing issue.
another thing to try is to back the clock to default to see if that helps, also make sure your cpu temps are not too high. good luck

wrong jumper settings will just cause the drive to not be seen by the bios.
try taking it off spread spectrum and see if that helps

Whines can also be caused by bad caps, which Antecs have a reputation for. Try stopping the fan with a pencil and see if that gets rid of the whining.

Okay guys solved the problem. It was one of the following:

1. bad sata cable
2. improper power connection - changed 4 pin to sata power connector to a standard 4 pin connector to HD
3. bad sata port on the mobo
4. HD doesn't like being slaved...

I feel like such a n00b!

Yes I would try the these 4 things:

1. try a different sata cable
2. try a different power connector - you might want to try the sata connector if ur having problems with 4 pin or viceversa
3. Switch between sata ports. My mobo has 4. I tried another port.
4. See your manual. Some SATA hds don't seem to like slaving...
