New Hardrive with two startup Errors

I had a failing hardrive(after only one year), and replaced it recently with the 1tb wd black drive. I used acronis to copy the old HD, so two errors came to my new drive.

1) The first error is that my HP deskjet printer software needs to be installed. I click that it's ok for windows to install it. Windows installs it successfully and the printer works. When I restart my pc, I get the same error and same result. It keeps happening. Everything works, I just keep having to click ok for windows to install the software, and it keeps installing it.

2) I get a message that windows defender is not working. It tells me to restart the pc or start it manually. I try to manually start it, but get the same error. Once I click away the error message, the computer works just fine. I don't need defender, but the message is anoying and it would be nice to fix the problem.

I have done a chkdsk, mcaffe virus scan, and adaware spyware scans. My OS is vista 32.

Well your not going to like what I'd recommend, but it would be best to just re-format and do a clean install of the OS. This is the kind of thing that can happen when you copy over a damaged/corrupted/messed up of a previous install. Yeah I know its a bit time consuming, but you should do this each time you move things from one build to the next. This has served me well for quite some time. It's up to you, but that is what I'd do.

Another vote for reformat from me. :thumbsup::laugh:
A year old Windows install can be pretty cluttered.

There's no reason why your Acronis migration shouldn't work for you. If these are your only two issues, I'd try to fix them first before re-installing the whole OS.

Are you able to you uninstall Windows Defender and then re-install it?

Similarily, I'd remove the printer from Windows, uninstall all of the HP Printer software, and then re-install it.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that the clean install is always best, but wanted to save some time for now. I'll try to remove and reinstall both items.

When I try to delete the windows defender folder, it says I need permission. I am the administrator on this computer. How should I delete it? Also, how would I reinstall defender as it's a part of the OS?

Whoops. I didn't catch the "Vista 32" at the end.

You might try the suggested fix in this post.

"You might try this. Go to the main Windows Update window and click on
"Installed Updates" (on the left-hand side of the window, at the bottom), and
then remove "Update for Microsoft Windows (KB931099)" (only).

Reboot. Reboot again. Go back to Windows Update, and re-install the same
update, by clicking on the Check for Updates button.

This should essentially re-install Windows Defender on Vista."

This fix seemed to work for some folks.

Just to update:

I uninstalled all printer drivers and have the same situation when I reboot. I also unintalled the latest windows update and reinstalled it after rebooting twice and nothing changed.

My plan now is to buy one of the other wd black hard drives and slowly start the reinstallation process. This way I can avoid any downtime since my current drive is working. When I have the new drive up to date, I'll reformat my current drive.
