I installed a 40 gig HD so i could backup some files, but after i connected it and everything it just kept freezing at the first screen of the bootup (where you have the option of pressing delete to go into the bios). Why would that happen and how can i fix it?

maybe a damaged boot.ini?

edit: you can put the xp cd in and repair your boot.ini if needed.

Is this a new or known good HDD? I've had the same thing happen with Western Digital drives. Double check the jumpers and maybe disconnect any optical drives.

Yeah, it's an old Wester Digital drive, not know to be good. Don't want to jump right to the conclusion that it's defective though, maybe it's another problem. I can take out the drive and boot up fine, by the way.

Check the jumper on the drive...or better yet, use the CD's ide cable and see how that goes.
It sounds like you have 2 masters jumpered on the same IDE...

The basics,
-Jumper Setting correct?
-Is it detected in the bios?
-Is it partitioned, formatted?
-Needs to be initialized by Xp
