Ive got a Fujitsu 8.4 GB on this Celery 400@500 witha GF2MX, my brother has a Dell P2-450 which on general benchmarks is about the same as my cel 500, In games this box does just fine but general windows work , like opening folders , etc is very laggy and im totaly annoyed by it, I posted a message and some guy offered me $80, actualy 2 guys did, anyhow i think thats a real sweet deal since i can go and buy a new Maxtor 7200 RPM 15 GB ata-100 for $120 (this is canuck btw) Im pretty sure its the harddrive thats the bottlekneck..... anyone agree ? Also should I go for Maxtor or Quantum or WD ? (too poor for IBM)

Did you enable DMA for the hard drive?

Yea, new hard drives can sometimes work wonders for general Windows work, particularly web browsing. What you want is a drive with a low seek time (Maxtor is fine) since you probably have ATA33 on your mobo and it can't handle a super-fast transfer rate anyway.

I'm not that familiar with Fujitsu drives, but if it's a 5400 RPM drive then you could definitely benefit from an upgrade. Two of the main causes of general sluggishness like you've described are a slow hard drive and not enough RAM. I would recommend no less than 128MB for Win98 and 256MB for Win2k. Also, if you're the type of person that's on the computer a lot and don't ever reformant and do a clean install or at least do a defrag then that could slow your system as well. If you're going to get a new drive then a Maxtor 7200RPM will do nicely. Just try to get one from the DiamondMax Plus60 line as they are the fastest.

Yes 5400 RPM, I have 128 ram so it should be fine, but i hate slugishness i want my comp to be smooth, preformance in games is more then fine, but windows preformance can sometimes be unsattisfactory.

if DMA isnt enabled, do that, and do you have a virus program that scans everything you open? ifso that could be doing it also
