New guy with networking ????

I am looking into going back to school and I am looking into networking.

What do you guys think the best field or area to get more education in? Is a degree better than say MCSE?

Probably an EE, CE, or CS.

Do you want to be in sales? Maybe throw in a double major with Business along with that.

If you're gonna do it, do a BS, dont go the easy route and opt for a BA.

I'm not sure what I should do. I just want to be able to get a job (if needed) in networking. Right now I am a programmer but I decided, because things have really dried up in the programming field where I live, that I would supplement my resume.

You dont have to renew a BS every 3 years. MCSE isnt a big deal but it wont hurt you. Remember anyone can get an MCSE these days, HR looks for Certs and vendors, Admins look for quality experience and know how (they dont care what certs you have). Experience is whats going to get you up and over 40k/yr. Security is where its at right now do more of your electives in Network Security and try and find classes that involve projects. Add these projects in a resume and try to work in the schools IT dept if possible. Remember experience is what gets you the job...dont expect to make 60k right out of college avg with 2yr experience is around 30-40k/yr right now. Become a security specialist and youll make close to 6 digits after a few years

EE=Electrical Engineering
CE=Compuer Engineering
CS=Computer Science

The two engineering degrees will typically get you into the IEEE and officially give you the title of engineer, which isnt a bad thing to have associated with your name.

Just curious - Is networking something where you constantly have to get additional training, or can you just read up on your own? Is stuff you learned 10 years ago pretty much hopelessly outdated, or what?

no, the core concepts always apply. The technology just changes. read - OSI model.

Spidey is right, you need to learn the fundamentals.
OSI and TCP/IP are good foundations.
Networking is changing just like hardware, it just builds on the ground floor.
