So the guy I've worked with for the past year got a new job and is leaving. Not the end of the world but it means a new guy in the office that I've got to train.

I can show him how to do the work with no problem but I've never had to train anybody. For those of you who have had to do this sort of thing, what is the best approach to training somebody to help make them feel comfortable?

I give htem a day to read all the useless manuals and company policies that aren't covered by their HR welcome meetings.

Then I let them follow me around through the day writing notes asking questions. THen I give them a couple simple tasks and maybe follow them for a day.

After that, they ask me any questions they may or may not have.

I like to start with an x-rated trip to the supply room followed by me getting them fired :p jk

Do show them any shortcuts you've picked up along the way, let them learn those for themselves.

keep an eye on whether they're taking notes and asking the right questions or just saying "uh huh...yeah...ok...yeah...uh huh." I like when new people ask the right questions as i'm explaining things. i have no problem clarifying for them. i have no tolerance for stupid questions and having to repeat myself over and over again.

in my line of work, i start them with repetitive tasks so they get used to the process. then i'll bump them up to harder stuff depending on how fast they catch on.

does he already have an anandtech account? or do you have to help him get signed up?

once he is signed up, he can post any questions he has about the job here in OT and we'll hook him up ;)

Hahah, he'll get a computer to use, but days where we're in the office for any extended period of time are rare.
I'd just prefer he doesn't have to learn completely using the trial by fire method. I had a day of training and then got thrown in the field to do jobs, I came so close to quitting those first couple of months because of that.
I guess I'll try Kelvrick's method and see how it goes.
Thanks.
