Granted I go to school in Michigan, my alternative route would be to work in a more "local" city like Chicago or Minneapolis.

blue703 - engineering salaries vary by field. Chemical engineers usually make the most at ~60-65k average, while civils pay towards the low end ~45-50k. Mech Eng is below Chemical and EE but still "up there" as far as salary is concerned. For example, General Motors pays fresh Mech Engs 60k out of school. The oil industry is known to pay significantly higher than average salaries though.

Engineering in the oil industry is usually 20 percent higher than the rest of engineering, to compensate for adverse working conditions, limited job market, etc.

Just remember, once you choose to do oil, be prepared for life in Texas unless you are willing to take a paycut to move to another industry.
