I don't know about the Android app as I still don't have it, but the web version still have the 'All mail' label that will show you all your mails, even after you configure your inbox with the smart filtering.

So it's a label? Interesting. It would be nice if they made an All mail tab. Makes sense when they're moving to tabs and away from the old fashioned labels.

Yeah, I type on click on the bottom, I read on the top. Having me move both hands all over the fucking thing is NOT acceptable.

Ironic part?
I downloaded the big update just before entering this thread.

I guess it's a UI thing to make sure action bar is at the top even though it makes more sense for the menu button to be at the bottom. Like if it's just a UI issue to have a consistent menu interface which resulted in removing the menu button from phones, why would the logical solution be to move the software menu button to the top of the screen? Not sure. I see it as a form over function. With that said, oh well? Just gotta get used to it.

The new 'filters' aren't labels. They're presented as pre-determined tabs shown horizontally across the screen on your 'Inbox'.

The 'All mail' label has always been there. It shows you everything in your account regardless of label.

Edit: I think I finally get what you're trying to say, but in this case an 'All mail' tab on your Inbox won't make sense as the tabs are subsets of 'Inbox', while 'Inbox' itself is a subset of 'All mail'.

Ah yeah. I guess I just kinda treated it like a label because it was near the labels.

However all mail includes archived stuff. What they need in the new tabbed interface is an old fashioned "All Inbox" so that I can have my full inbox as well as a filtered inbox.

Anyway, I kinda feel like they're trying too much. First priority inbox and then this. The two don't really mix. It has to be one or the other.

I agree, this feels like GMail 2.0 Beta or something like that. It essentially probably is, with their trying out different stuff and will likely move forward based on users feedback.

I really like the Gmail concept here:

Heh. I think the priority inbox like my Gmail desktop would be more useful than the new tabs. I don't necessarily agree with the swipe up or down to delete/archive within an email though.

That does look nice... and honestly with the trash button at the top what the hell reason would we have to swipe down instead of just tapping the button lol. Otherwise, very nice.

I actually think that the new Gmail is nice, I just wish delete wasn't moved to the drop down menu but other than that it's great.

I installed the APK from some news site, and I was not receiving my email. As in, it wasn't getting pushed or synced to my phone. I had all the correct settings enabled.

So I just rolled back to the old one until it actually shows up in the market for me.

Maybe i dont have it setup correctly but i just noticed a difference between my N4 and N7 both still on old gmail app. I never go into the actual app, i take action on emails either through the notification bar or web interface

N4 - buttons for search, new email, labels,. delete, archive are at the bottom
N7 - split columns, left resembles web interface with action buttons on top

I don't understand why the different sections don't show up in the Android app until you enable them in the web version. Incredibly weird, you have the new app but it's missing the main feature.

The best thing about the new app is the ability to have sound notifications just for your primary mail, which you could kinda achieve before with labels and filters, which is all this is really. Google need to add a new notification tone just for gmail, the standard alert tone is used across too many different alerts in Android.

So... I guess I'm missing something, but I don't have the new Gmail on mobile or desktop. Mobile I understand is a delayed rollout or I can sideload, but how do I get it on desktop?

I believe on desktop you have to click the gear/settings and click configure inbox or something of that sort. I don't remember.

Gear icon (top right) - configure inbox

Thanks.

Tried it and immediately turned it off. I'm not one of those people with hundreds/thousands of unread email. I've always kept my inbox neat and with the search functionality I have no need for these tabs.

So I finally got the update on the phone, and while I like it a lot, somehow it is now extremely slow in opening my labels.

Clearly this is not because of the filtering, as it only affects the inbox (which is still snappy), but something else changed that caused opening my labels now taking a long time.

Also, what's with the goofy giant icon of the first initial of the sender? It took me a while to figure out what this is.

Edit: So I force closed the GMail app and relaunch the app and now it's snappy all around, no more slowness on the labels. Not sure what happened there.

make sure those labels are still synced, maybe that got reset.

How do I delete a message? Is swiping it away to 'archive' the same as deleting?

No, it isn't. In General settings change the Archive & delete actions to "Show delete only," and that'll let you swipe to delete. Make sure the check box for "swipe to delete" is checked.

try reinstalling it... then go into the application settings and clear the cache and data. it should fix your issue...

so mine just updated. guess its a good thing i dont use it as i dont like it. i dont like it at all

Just updated.. I miss the check boxes and deleting a bunch at once. Unless I'm missing some option to select. 🙁

I actually do wish that the toolbar was at the bottom, but the changes could be cool. Haven't played with it much, and at first I kind of resented how it reminded me of Google+, but I think I could get used to it. Being able to archive from the notification is definitely needed and appreciated.
