Update #4: Having used the new version for a while on a large device (Note II), I can confirm that the move of the bottom bar with useful buttons like Delete and Mark Unread to the top is terrible for user experience. No, no, no. Just no. We need an option to bring it back to the bottom, and that's a fact.

lol. This certainly reinforces my complaints earlier about removing the menu button and replacing it with a menu button at the top of the action bar. While I understand the consistency aspect of things, it gets harder and harder for us to interact both with the top and bottom of large devices.

Also the colors are too much for me for the contact images. It's one thing they did on iOS where you only see it when you open the email, but it's another when my Gmail looks like a learn your ABCs tutorial.

Edit: Wish the pull to refresh were done better, but overall a nice cleanup.

I downloaded it a bit earlier.

Took me a while to get it set up the way I wanted, but now that I have it I like it.

I keep my inbox pretty clean anyway, it's mostly stuff that'll need my attention within a week or two (usually CC bills) everything else gets archived or deleted. With that being said, on mobile I want to see my entire inbox all at once it's just easier for me that way instead of having to swipe the panel over, tap, swipe the panel again, tap. I think that's a step backwards for mobile. On the desktop it's fine because I have a mouse and clicking the tabs is pretty simple.

Oh if you want it to default the initial view to show everything go into your account settings and change the inbox type to priority.

I've always maintained that the old method of having stuff on the bottom was good design and this trend of moving stuff to the top (or worse, to the top left, like the iOS back button) is absolutely terrible design.

Do these people not USE their phones?

I don't see what's so bad about it, I like the new drawer designs since you can slide it out by swiping from the side of the screen.

I think its great. It functions well and is consistent with the rest of the Google Apps library.

There is zero loss of function from what I'm trying out.

Because you have to swipe in from the edge. You're not swiping from the edge, in which on the player screen, goes backward on the playlist.

Its 100% consistent with every other google app that does the EXACT SAME THING (well except the ones that haven't been updated yet to the new guidelines such as maps). It slides out the side bar in Currents, gmail and music.

And I can't think of any icon that is the same on different google apps that do different things.

I think they have a great idea of what they are doing and are showing it with the new redesigned Android Market, Music, Gmail, and the new web interface.

I understand the menu slides out, but if you compare Hangouts and Gmail, with Gmail you have to swipe further from the edge, like the very edge. The target area is very small in terms of dp. Compare to an app like Pulse that's been doing it for years and you can see which one is easier to slide to bring out the side menu.

With hangouts, I've seen more than a few individuals complain that it's very easy to accidentally archive a chat. Same with Gmail. It's all over reddit.com/r/android

I have been avoiding the new Gmail app, maybe for dumb reasons, so I want to set the record straight:

From my understanding the whole point of this new email app is for people who actually organize and manage their Gmail into nice and neat folders. I have avoided because that is useless to a guy like me without a single folder and 16,000+ unread messages.

As it is I really like how the "old" Gmail app is a feed basically of my email because that is how I treat it.

Does the new Gmail do anything for someone like me, or should I continue to avoid it?

With the new app you don't have to try to organize it into folders, it does it for you. It organizes them into tabs like Primary, Social, Forums, Updates. You can turn it off if it's not your thing. I'm trying to decide if I like it or not.

It seems like a band-aid fix for people who've let their email get into a mess which admittedly is a whole other problem. It really doesn't take long to unsubscribe to mail as it arrives and keep a clean inbox, people just can't be bothered. 80% of my email is from people I know, the rest are updates from sites I allow to send me updates. I probably have to unsubscribe to something once every couple of weeks.

But it doesn't let you see all your mail if you start sorting into these folders right? I don't see how this is any different from a smart filter with labels. That's fine and all, but I'd like to be able to see all my mail if I want.

I don't know about the Android app as I still don't have it, but the web version still have the 'All mail' label that will show you all your mails, even after you configure your inbox with the smart filtering.
