New Gmail Account created at random, or is the account hacked?

My wife today received an email on her Gmail account that a new gmail account was created for her : to her surprise. She never did the creating, so she immediately clicked on the link provided on the same email (If you didn't create this Gmail address and don't recognize this email, please click ___ ) to cancel the request. How convenient that gmail is providing a cancel option too - maybe they have seen such 'accidents' happen often?

The really troubling part of this whole thing was that the new email id was - a large part of her long password to her old gmail account! She has a lengthy password of 18 characters (it's a garbled sentence in english), and the new email id 'assigned' to her was the first 15 characters from that list!?!

I'm not sure if that proves it was machine-generated mistake, or that it was some tentative hacking effort. Have asked her to change her password for now, hopefully that's that.

but how did the scamster get to her password? S/he used 15 out of 18 words exactly right, so that cannot be a coincidence.

Freaky. Do keep us posted, please.
Contact Engadget or Gizmodo, see if they get interested in the story, maybe they can get to dig up some more from Google...
