Herbert Funke and Philipp Will - now the directors of Funke & Will Aktiengesellschaft - did not want to complete their Auto Engineering studies at Cologne Technical University with just ordinary degrees. They came to the decision to develop a 'radical' sports roadster based on an aluminum space frame. Not long after this they got to know Oliver Schweizer, who was just about to finish his design degree in Karlsruhe. Consequently, three final dissertations at two universities in two different parts of Germany led to the creation of "The Most Uncompromising Car of the Moment" (Auto Motor und Sport 14/2000).
