More NSA / GCHQ shennanigans have been exposed to the harsh light of day by Edward Snowden and that brings up everyone's favorite topic: the Kinect. The GCHQ, Britain's NSA counterpart, has been revealed to be gathering up Yahoo webcam feeds in bulk. Yahoo is of course outraged (outraged I tell you!) about this new violation of privacy by our spy services. In the story was this little nugget:

While the documents do not detail efforts as widescale as those against Yahoo users, one presentation discusses with interest the potential and capabilities of the Xbox 360's Kinect camera, saying it generated "fairly normal webcam traffic" and was being evaluated as part of a wider program.

Documents previously revealed in the Guardian showed the NSA were exploring the video capabilities of game consoles for surveillance purposes.

Microsoft, the maker of Xbox, faced a privacy backlash last year when details emerged that the camera bundled with its new console, the Xbox One, would be always-on by default.

Sure...95% of the time you may just be lounging around your house.

But let's think for second some of you actually have sex. Let's say you have sex on your couch, right in front of your Kinect. And for sake of argument let's say the Kinect is sending data to the NSA.

One might argue...who cares if the NSA sees you have sex? Let's put today's youtube environment into perspective. Where do you think leaks come from? They don't come from the NSA, they don't come from stars (well some do), movies don't get leaked on the internet by the publishers, albums either.

They get leaked by the people who work for them or hackers. Every day people like you or me. Let's say they work for the NSA and their job is to go through video footage looking for suspicious/illegal behavior. Sure, by job definition they'll probably skip your "sex tape" but they may just decide that needs to go up on the interwebz for the lulz.

Maybe that seems far fetched, but in this day and age it is not at all. Stuff is hacked and leaked every day and people are only human. Think of all the mean, stupid, and nasty things they do to people all the time, do you think they'll regret 10 seconds of letting a video of your willy on the internet to show their friends what they have to watch everyday? I probably don't care if some stranger in the government sees me have sex, but I will probably care if I become an internet sensation and have to explain why there's a sex tape of me on Tosh 2.0 to my family.

So yes, it is entirely possible that given the right incentive, this could happen. It probably isn't happening right NOW, but who's going to know when it does? It's just something to keep in mind.

On a side note smackababy - most of my friends and myself still use yahoo for messaging. I refuse to broadcast cams anywhere/anytime though regardless of app.

You forget that this is all bullshit...100% bullshit. The kinect is sending no data so it doesn't matter. It is listening for commands and turns on the censor to tell who is playing but that data isn't broadcast out to the world.

Did you miss the "not happening right now" part? They do these things called updates. Are you going to monitor it 24/7 for the life of it?

Chances are you may be right, it will never happen...but even if it did you wouldn't know until someone leaked the info. How long has all this other stuff been being monitored and we're just now finding out about it?

My guess is if they ever DID do it. It would be IP based and have an off and on switch they could turn on at will. They would be working with your ISP to get your info (we already know the ISPs are in their grasp). This would be much harder to catch in the act than just leaving it running.

Right now it's all hypothesis (from a Kinect standpoint), but again, you won't even know it happened until years down the road. To act like the NSA or MS would never consider this is just plain ignorant.
