New Gaming PC Build Critique

Hi everyone, 90% of my current system is 3+ years old and with the release of Sandy Bridge I think it's a great time to upgrade. This is what I've put together so far but admit I'm no expert on the current offerings.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

This will mostly be used for PC gaming.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

$3,000 is my budget (including a new monitor). Obviously, the less I spend the better.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

United States, most likely Newegg.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

I have no brand preference, I'm merely interested in what will give me the best value for my money.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

I do not anticipate using any parts from my current PC.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

Very little, I'm not expert -- that's why I'm posting here!

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

I plan on overclocking on air only with an aftermarket fan/heatsink.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

I plan on purchasing a Dell U2711 (unless this thread sways my choice) so I'm anticipating 2560x1440.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

Over the next few weeks once I've gathered enough input and decided on the parts.

Case: Antec P183B (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129061)

Blu-ray burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106346

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600k (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115070)

Motherboard: Asus P8P67 Pro (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131682)

GPU: EVGA Superclocked GTX 570 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130595)

PSU: Antec CP-850 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371024)

SSD - Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148348)

Monitor: Dell U2711 (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...284&redirect=1)

Thanks for everyones help!

Personally I'd choose the Sniper or Ripjaw X (if in stock) as both are newer than the Ripjaw you picked. Or Corsair Vengeance.

Consider this HDD (better value), though it's warranty is 3 year vs 5 on the WD.

CPX PSU? WTF is that? Will that work in an ATX case?

Probably 2 gtx570's at that rez.

Bollocks that is one big PSU, switch the case and get a different PSU.

From Newegg:
This unique power supplier exclusively compatible with some of Antec's most cutting-edge Gamer and Performance One enclosures, including the Twelve Hundred, P183 and P193

Thanks for all your help. Here's what I'm looking at now for case/PSU:

Case: Coolermaster HAF X (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119225)

PSU: CORSAIR HX-850 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-011-_-Product)

I'm going to SLI as well. One thing I forgot to ask -- what would be a good heatsink if I want to overclock?

FWIW, for the list of hardware you've posted, the 850 watt PSU is overkill. You could get by with a 650...but IMO, I'd get a 750. I like Corsair PSU's, and have one of their HX620's for my computer, but before you drop the hammer, take a good look at the XFX power supplies. They're rated higher by the PSU gods over at Jonnyguru.com, and are usually a bit lower in price. (if they'd just get rid of that FUGLY yellow fan!)

If you are going to SLI 570's then go ahead with a 750 Watt PSU, Case looks fine.

Yep...I missed the Sli part...and I love that HAF X case...it's big, well built, plenty of room for expansion, for big video cards, and room for big hands to work...plus it's designed with cable management in mind.

The HAF X is one case that can always make me hot and bothered that's for sure. 😉

What's wrong with that?

Hell, I paid $600 for my 19" Sony Trinitron monitor ON SALE back in 1998...I jumped at the price...about $300 off normal selling price.
its just ridiculous, for gaming you dont need to spend anywhere near that money to be satisified with the pic you receive from your monitor

Dude...you're welcome to game on a budget if that fits your wallet. If someone can afford to buy something nice...why not?
Who are you to say what might satisfy someone else's taste in graphics?

OP you know more than your letting on. That looks like a great build to me. I just think you're bragging. 😛

Looks like a decent start, but I have a few suggestions:
- Case: Good, note the case will happily take a normal ATX PSU.
- Blu-ray: I don't see the need for a Blu-ray burner over a combo drive, but it is fine if you need to burn Blu-rays
- CPU: There's no need for the 2600K over the 2500K, might as well save $100.
- Mobo: Good (required for SLI)
- GPU: Would not pay $20 each for somebody to overclock the GPU for me. I'd get two of the stock-clocked ones
- Memory: Would not pay the premium for DDR3 1600 and fancy heatspreaders. Get some normal DDR3 1333 instead.
- PSU: I see you've already changed this, but I'd go with the Earthwatts 750W. It got a good score at Jonnyguru.com and the only thing he really knocked it for was its MSRP. It's a steal at $80.
- SSD: I would get a Sandforce like the Vertex 2. Cheaper and faster where it matters
- HDD: I would get the Samsung F3 for $55. Just as fast and less expensive.
- Monitor: Good

We have those monitors at school, they are nice, yeah, but I doubt I'd ever pay that much for a monitor without being in professional design...

Not to derail, but I have never heard anyone explain why (if) TN can't be made with the higher resolutions? Are monitor makers all in collusion to protect their profits? Does pixel defect rate of TN get so bad at higher resolution that cost would be similar to IPS at same resolution?

I'm sure there's tons of enthusiasts that would be all over say a $350 27" 2560x1440, or $450 30" 2560x1600. Something will have to change since the market is getting so saturated with cheap 21-24" 1920x1080s that few will be buying unless their old one breaks.
