I'm having issues with the feel of the mouse. I've used a MX700 for 4 years now, and that shape feels super comfy to me. The hard lines of the G9 just don't feel right. I'm hoping I get used to it, because other than that, the performance and features are great.

I also used an MX700 for years until it started flaking out with the double-click problem others talk about. Currently using an MX Revolution that Logitech sent me as a warranty replacement, which is nice, but a bit heavy and unbalanced for gaming. The Shape is pretty good except the thumb button's area, where the sharp edge and thin/stiff buttons don't provide proper counter-balance when using those keys.

I'm hoping Logitech comes out with another cordless version of the G9 but last I heard there was no plans to. I would've gotten the G7 long ago if it had 2 thumb buttons but it doesn't seem like its getting an update like the G5 did. Makes me wish I got an MX1000 when they were available, as it seems like the best compromise between the MX700 and current wireless mice. I'm really hoping someone puts an analog thumb stick or even a d-pad (similar to the Nostromo) on a gaming mouse. Now that would be awesome!

???

My MX1000 is having similar issues recently. :(

Im glad Im not the only one having problems with the Habu. Im on my second, but I have a feeling Im gonna have to call MS about this one as well.

For those of you with an MX518 like me (or any of the pre-G5 mice), I found an addon called uberoptions to enable the game profiles and several other settings in the Setpoint program. It turns out that Setpoint already supports all the profile functionality. It appears to have been intentionally disabled on the older mice, presumably to have a bigger difference between their products (thanks a lot, Logitech ), but can be enabled by editing the user.xml file. This uberoptions installer does all the work for you.

Logitech has disabled stuff for a long time. Even on the new Revolution mice, you can't set any button besides the wheel to turn click-to-click on and off. This is despite the fact that a lot of people use the wheel press to scroll. With Uberoptions you can set the "search" or any other button to change modes.

Ok, so wired and extremely responsive...

Are you going to be using the mouse with your left or right hand? Do you have any preferences based on how you hold the mouse? Mouse size preference? Buttons preferences? What game type(s) do you predominantly play?

Based on the very little information you've provided, I'd say the best bet would most likely be the Razer DeathAdder - excellent ergonomics designed around how the majority of the users (right hand form factor with emphasis on palm usage). Nothing outperforms this mouse with its sensor and it is the most tried and true of its generation (Razer has newer mice that use the same sensor and an even newer laser mouse yet these haven't quite had all the kinks ironed out)

2nd best option would be the Logitech MX518 as long as you're willing to manually change the polling rate

Of course the recommendation can change pretty drastically depending upon how you might answer some of those questions I asked.

Not true, I have never installed SetPoint on XP or Vista and sensitivity switching has worked on both.

I'm using a G9, it sucked going back to wired mice, but some of the more interesting features:
- The mouse wheel is flawless, very well made. It also has 2 modes, the default is a nice solid click, but you can switch to a free-spinning mode with a button on the underside of the mouse
- Weights. Kind of gimmicky, I don't actually use them, but I do acknowledge that you could technically set the mouse to any number of weights to fit your preference.
- The mouse1 / mouse2 buttons are very well made and click crisp and cleanly. This is a big thing for me, I hate mice where the mouse1 and mouse2 buttons wear down after some use
- It has 2 body kits, so you can switch to whichever one fits how you hold the mouse, I stuck with the default so far because I really like the design.

Also, like avp, I've never installed setpoint either for any of my mice.

VERY true, that mouse is indestructable and lighter than Mx518.. It will also do 1000hz no problem.

N00bers play with all the new stuff with the quirky middle wheel. TRUST me having the center wheel roll and single click is heaven. the side clicks on the cent wheel willl fk u up.

I can vouch for a few of these since I own a MX518 I use at home, great mouse but mines just all worn out, feet came off the bottom and the logo at the top is all worn down to the plastic. Love the feel of the thing, great response rate and amount of buttons. I also have the G7, which I now use at work, it's alright, never been a fan of the wireless mice and now I know why, battery dies quick and I don't like the thumbrest being all smooth instead of more of a grip on the MX518. But I can't complain it's still a decent mouse, don't really use any of the gaming dpi settings at work. I'm still thinking about getting a new mouse and mousepad for at home but I was thinking about the G9 or one of the Razers, I totally wore out my ratpadz mousepad so that doesn't help me at all

I keep trying to upgrade from my MX510 that I've been using since 2003 or so but every "gaming" mouse I try I find to have significant flaws and I end up returning. I've tried the G5, G9, some microsoft one, and a couple others, none can beat the MX510. Maybe I've just been using it for so long that I am so used to it that I can't adapt to anything new. For one thing, I hate the stupid DPI adjustmenters, because they are always either way too fast or way too slow, there is no "default ps/2 mouse speed" option. The G5 has a weird grip material and only 1 thumb button. The G9's middle mouse button is too hard to press without scrolling the really sensitive wheel, and also the side of the mouse drags on the mouse pad when lifting it to reposition it, which I found to be extremely annoying and why I returned it. Oh well, I just hope my MX510 lasts another 5 years. :)

I've got the red MX518. I've never installed any software and the sensitivity buttons work just fine. Binding the side buttons has never been an issue either. It's a great mouse for sure.

MX518, but I'm now using the wireless G7 (discontinued, but you can still find them) and love it. Super responsive, no lag that I can tell. I played Guitar Hero strumming with the mouse and that requires real precision timing. Love it.

Which version do you have? I have the original gray 1600dpi one and if I close down Setpoint (just using the "exit" option in the program's startup icon), the sensitivity buttons immediately stop working. It could be that the newer one does the switching in hardware like the G5.

I've been using this Saitek GM3200 Laser mouse for a month or so. I love it. I don't like how the Logitech mice feel in my hand (G5/MX518) but thought this felt great in my hand. I went to a B&M so I could return it and feel the mice first. I love it and am now almost used to 3200 dpi at my desktop. Changing the mouse resolution is fast and on the fly with a quick flick of a finger, so is changing profiles. It had many options for weight and I'm very happy with it over all.

I've owned the MX500, MX510 and just recently purchased the G5 (v2) and I love it. Make sure you get the second release of it though.

I don't know about other people here, but I want a single mouse that's good for both gaming and normal Windows desktop usage, but I haven't had a lot of luck.

- I had an Logitech MX1000, which was hand-comfortable but never felt that accurate for me. There were some oddball issues where if you lifted up the mouse to far while repositioning it, the laser turned off

- Then I got an MX Revolution, which was even more comfortable and I liked the wheel, but the cordless range on the USB RF dongle was pathetic (the charger stand no longer is the antenna like on the MX1000) - it had to be plugged into my USB keyboard or I got horrid dropouts. I'm talking a 2 foot range maximum for decent perfomance - 3 feet was too far. And then battery life went to hell after 4 months and it wouldn't hold a charge anymore.

- Then I got a MS Habu. Decently comfortable in my hand, but not as nice as the MX's. This thing was an absolute pain in the a** to get Windows to recognize. I had to get firmware upgrades and download drivers and do everything in the right order because if you screw it up, Windows permantly treats it like a generic USB mouse. (Google the many horror stories - neither MS nor Razer seem to care to support the product). I got it working, though, and it's fine in games. But it's horridly inaccurate for normal Windows desktop usage (like web browsing, etc). There's a mouse control panel setting ("Enhance pointer precision") that makes it better, but the habu driver software somehow prevents this from being remembered after reboots, and the habu's own software equivalent setting doesn't do the trick, so I have to reset this every bootup.

If you don't mind a cord the G9 is pretty nice. It has a lot of buttons for gaming and desktop use, plus more settings than most people need. I have some issues with the comfort, but I'm slowly getting used to it. It's a very nice mouse, and the freewheel scrolling is the best thing to happen to mice since the optical scanner :^)

I'm still using an mx-500 which I love. The shape of it it almost perfect.
I want to go wireless and was going to get a G7 but the lack of two side buttons bothers me. I regularly use both of those in games and windows(forward/back). I was hoping they'd re-release it with two side buttons like they did the G5 but no dice. I've looked at the G9 online but I'm reluctant to buy it without getting a chance to hold it first. My friend has the MX Revolution which seemed pretty good when I tried it out.

Was in BB today picking up a few HD movies and saw MS had a new Sidewinder Gaming Mouse out. Feel was pretty good although build quality seemed a bit unpolished. The two thumb buttons were very exaggerated raised radio buttons and there was a third way up near the index finger button. Bottom looked rather cheap, but it didn't seem to restrict movement. I also held the G9 a bit more and it really conforms well to the way I hold the mouse. Even though it seems as though its not oriented properly, my hand lays on it almost perfectly. Will probably end up picking one up next time it goes on sale.

They re-released the G5 with added features. Two side buttons is one of them.
