New Gaming Headset?

I really need a new headset since my last pair broke. I use them for gaming (mostly fps games) and I need to be able to hear foot steps. I am also going to buy a new sound card. I was checking out the razer barracuda sound card+headset and I can get it for about $200+shipping. Is there any other sound card/headset that I should get?
 
I have a Icemat Siberia (now steelseries siberia) headset which cost me about 45 bucks. Comes with a clip on direcitonal mic and lets me rock people nicely in CS:S and TF2. Not to toot my own horn, but I am the #1 player in both total kills and kills/minute in TF2 on the server I play (its pretty competitive too), and I definitely attribute a bit of a boost in score using the headset over my speakers since I can detect directional footsteps and whatnot much more precisely, so I can vouch for your needs with it well enough.

However I am considering replacing my headset with a Sennheiser 555 and keeping the microphone that came with the steelseries. Still I would recommend the headset if you arent an audiophile at heart.

The Razer I hear good things about, and the 5.1 nature of the headset intrigues me over just the stereo headset, but I honestly wonder how well it works. Not to metion, the Razer card I dont hear such good things about without its headset and definitely the complaint is always that it is overpriced for what it does.

I also have the iCEMAT SIberia's and love them. The only knock is they are easily broken when stepped on with big feet 😛

Definitely good enough for directional sound and pretty good for music.

Well we are just two pea's in a pod aren't we. I am also looking for another headset because my iCEMATs are broken and are held together with electrical tape. The HD555 sound like a good headset and just using a clip mic sounds good. The bad thing I worry about is the bass capability in "better" headphones. The audiophile headphones seem to accentuate the highs more so then bass which to me renders them too much like "tin can" sound. I have no experience with HD555 so they may not have that problem.

I thought about the Razer ones too. But after so many reviews it becomes clear they are good for gaming and thats it. Mediocre in movies and horrid in bass intensive music. Gaming they seem to be superior at sound positioning and in movies seem to do fine as long as bass isn't involved. Musically the bass is more "rumble" than real bass which IMO should be reserved for playstation controllers. Yes I am a basshead, but I do like highs as well, I'm just so damned picky.



 
Well for around $200 you could get a pair of A-900's and a cheap-ish sound card. The HD555's are also great, but they are of open design so they leak sound and aren't good for LAN parties.
 
I'm using a Plantronics DSP 500. Bought it during their product clearance sale. They don't make 'em anymore. But it's the best gaming headset I've ever used..
