New Game Help? DII was a long time ago

I played DII more than any human should probably sit at a computer. I loved it. As life caught up, I found myself having to actually work instead of gaming.

I had some extra time when DIII was released and gave it a go. I didnt like it at all. I dont know if I was expecting an incredible revamp of DII and because it was different, I didnt like it, or what, but I tried .... no luck.

I now have some time at night and would like to pick up a new game. Based on my love for DII, is there something recent you guys could suggest? If there is something around the corner, I can wait. Just wanted to get your opinions.

Thanks!

How long ago had you tried Diablo 3? I hear it has had some major changes since it was released. You may give it another go if it was a couple years ago.

If you like hack-and-slash-ey fantasy RPGs, I guess Oblivion and Skyrim would be good ones to go for.

There are a number of F2P MMORPGs you might enjoy too. I'm playing quite a bit of SWTOR at the moment. Whether Star Wars is fantasy, sci-fi, or both, and how much, I will leave as an argument for others. I get to shoot lightning out of my fingers.

Torchlight 1 & 2 have a very strong Diablo feel (which is unsurprising given 2 lead designers (Max & Erich Schaefer) were also the co-creators of Diablo 1 & 2).

Also, path of exile, its online but free to play, very closely based on diablo 2 but no matter what, nothing comes close to diablo 2 in replayability.

Titan Quest and its expansion, Immortal Throne.

Excellent action, lots of character combinations, cool junk, good looking monsters, lovely terrain. Its awesome.

This. Titan Quest and the Immortal Throne expansion are great. As someone else said, Torchlight 1 and 2 are similar, but personally, the cartoony graphic put me off. And yes, give Diabo 3 another shot. I like it much better since the major changes.

Count another vote for Titan Quest and Immortal Throne (best to play with Immortal Throne), especially coming from Diablo 2. Titan Quest: ID is best as a single-player game though, IMO. Consider that if you were mostly into the multiplayer aspect of D2.

I felt the same with Torchlight.

Don't think I seen others mention but for the price Grim Dawn is great.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that theres almost no community online for Titan Quest. Plan on just going thru the singleplayer campaign 3 times (difficulty settings).

Marvel Heroes is free and has a very active community. Now is a good time to play around with it and try out heroes, because the anniversary event is on. Similar to Diablo. Tons of classes, builds, loots, etc.

This coming week is a free hero of choice giveaway for everyone, too, so that is nice.

TQ + IT and Torchlight 1 are both great picks. I haven't found Torchlight 2 to be as fun as 1 so I'd play 1 first.

Thanks for all the input and help guys. I should have mentioned I really really enjoy multiplayer aspects of whatever game I am playing. I don't think I would get as much enjoyment out of a single player game.

Would that take TQ out of the running?

Potentially. Do you like trying out the same content with various character classes/builds (TQ does this amazingly well)? Do you enjoy farming for random loot drops (with the chance for some really powerful gear)? As long as you enjoy those two things, and don't mind doing it solo, you'd probably really enjoy Titan Quest: Immortal Throne. It's a very well put-together game, but it does lack Diablo 2 style multiplayer (with Battle.net, etc.). It does have multiplayer, but I think that only works with direct connect with a friend or something (where you get your friend's IP address, or vice versa, and connect that way).

If multiplayer is very important to you, multiplayer similar to how Diablo 2 did things, you should probably give Diablo 3 another try. The difference between D3 now and D3 at release is night and day. I abandoned D3 due to frustration or just sheer disappointment multiple times in the early going, but I've enjoyed it quite a bit since loot 2.0 came out. There is very minimal trading (essentially no trading) currently in the game, but there are many opportunities to play with other people, etc. There's even a clan here for these AnandTech forums.

Diablo III today is a way different experience than when it was first released. I'd at least give it another shot if it goes on sale. It is leaps and bounds better than the release game in my opinion.

How has TQ been mentioned in almost every post, yet Grim Dawn only has two mentions? Grim Dawn is the spiritual successor to Titan Quest.

Also, Path of Exile is online only and is made by a few of the original Blizzard North team (the ones who made D2). I should also mention that Grim Dawn is also made by members of Blizzard North.

+1 for Grim Dawn. Path of Exile is also good, but I prefer Grim Dawn. Both games over-stimulate my pack rat mentality but Path of Exile does this frustratingly so. Maybe the lack of an easy to use way of trading like an auction house, which I've come to expect in an online only type of game I just want to quickly put stuff up for sale and buy stuff (and NO REAL MONEY!!!), neither of which I find "commerce chat" system conducive for.

I avoid all Early Access games. That probably has something to do with it.
