I am receiving delivery of my Ecoboost f150 in 2 weeks. The multidoor versions make great people movers too, if you are interested in towing.

I don't know where some of you are getting that it's FWD.

According to Edmunds: A 3.5-liter, 290-horsepower V6 is standard and a more efficient 237-hp turbocharged four-cylinder is optional. Both are hooked up to a six-speed automatic and can be had with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

That's what I was wondering. Always thought Explorers were RWD. o_O

Just saw one of the new ones the other day, well new body style (I don't know what year it changed?) and it looked damn good. So did the house wife getting out of it :D.

Because either a)Edmunds sucks b)thats the old model. Straight from Ford: Front-Wheel Drive (std.) / Intelligent 4WD (opt.)

The 4cyl ecoboost will be FWD only.

The new Explorer is definitely a front wheel drive platform. It's the D4 platform, Flex, MKT, and Explorer.

Unless Ford's own info for the missed 2011 year, and now the 2012 year, was/is incorrect, it's FWD only on the 2.0L I-4 EB in the Explorer. Not sure on the Edge though on if AWD will be optional with that engine, although I'd think not.

It's a FWD crossover platform, newb. Based on the Taurus IIRC.

I went ahead and test drove the "base" 3.7L V6 this morning and was very surprised. That is a NICE engine. Not lacking at all. Its got 302hp/270ft tq. I hammered the gas at highway speeds and it shot off. Makes me wonder why they just didn't use this engine in the Explorer as well. The tow capacity has me raising an eyebrow in suspicion though. Seems artificially low like they don't wanting it taking sales away from there Ecoboost and larger engines. With those hp/tq numbers it seems like the tow cap should be 1000-1500lbs more, even though its the larger frame of the F150. I might have to contact a Ford engineer about that. Anyway, my impressions of that engine are very positive. If anyone here has reservations about that engine they should drive one before passing judgement.

Might use a different transmission. Having a melty transmission will limit how much you can tow.

The 2011 Explorer was supposed to debut with the 2.0L I-4 Ecoboost (Ford even had it listed on the website and in the Order Guide, albeit with no mpg numbers) and then also be offered in the 2011 Edge. Then it turned into late availability for 2011. Now it's supposed to be in the 2012 Explorer and Edge, and also at least the 2013 Taurus.

Given the slip, if it slips more, one wonders WTF is wrong keeping it from being introduced...

EDIT: It will be an increased $$$ option over the normal 3.5L V-6, and only be offered in FWD. And, at least on the Explorer, no towing package for it - remains to be seen on Edge (Explorer comes with Class III, Edge comes with Class II, so maybe the Edge will be able to have it).

Chuck

I checked the 2012 Edge Order Guide again, towing package not available with the 2.0L I-4 Ecoboost either, just like the Explorer. Apperantly Ford doesn't see value in offering a Class II hitch for those that like to mount bikes or carriers for extra cargo, etc. :( Oh well....
