Well, I figured it was about time to join.

I have a few systems:

System 1:

Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2Ghz @2.5Ghz
Ati HD4850
2GB Corsair Value Ram

System 2:

P4 2.8Ghz
nVidia 6600gt (AGP)
1GB Corsair Value Ram

System 2 is my HTPC and I haven't installed the client on it yet. Will that one be able to run both the CPU and GPU clients? I'm glad to be part of the team. I know these systems aren't close to top notch, but every little bit helps I suppose!

Welcome to the team!

System 2 will not run the GPU client, it need to be CUDA compatible, so 8800 or greater.

F@H will make you want to upgrade.;)

Hey thanks! Is there anything I need to do to get my WU's to post on the team board, or do they get there automatically? I've read something about people dumping their scores...

Modular,

When you set up your clients and designate 198 as your team, the points/WU are automatically assigned to that team. The clients run without much human intervention.

IMO, on system one you'll be best served by running the GPU client only. You'll get decent PPD and your computer will still be fairly responsive and usable. Running both clients (CPU and GPU) will consume many resources and may render the machine unstable.

On system 2 you're better of not running the CPU client....it'll take forever to finish a WU and will use 100% of CPU resources.

The normal client should be fine on a P4, I have one running on a P4 and it brings in a few hundred ppd, it doesn't interfere with general usage of the PC at all. You can't run an SMP client on a P4 though.

But on the first system, just the GPU client.

OK, so I downloaded and have been running the high performance client (the sys tray) one overnight. The weird thing is that it's using both my GPU and my CPU. Is there a version that will only use the GPU?

With the GPU client, the CPU is utilized to feed data to the GPU; from what I've read, under WinXP the CPU is taxed much more than under WinVista. I run the GPU clients under Vista and around 20-30 % of a CPU core is utilized.

Welcome to the team! I hope your folding experience is a good one and you can feel glad about contributing to a meaningful science project that is already helping people.

Best,

Thanks for the welcome and help so far. I guess I'm a little interested in what I should be expecting from machine #1 as far as point are concerned. I've had it running for 2 days straight now and according to the site Cutthroat posted (EOC) I have completed 4 WU's and have about 770 points. Does that seem normal? It seems a little low to me given the GPU crunching, but I honestly have no idea what to expect.

Your history looks about right; you're returning 1 GPU work unit at each 3-hour update, which is right on target for that card.

Thanks Foxery, one last question for now: when I right click the systray icon and click on display the image comes up and start rotating and a timer is at the bottom as well as a progress counter. What exactly is that? Is it different than just running the client in the systray?

IT's supposed to be a graphical representation and also gives some benchmark information about your client.

BUT

The display function isn't working right and the Stanford people are saying don't try to run it. It can crash the client and also can corrupt the data you're crunching.

It would be a good idea to boot that machine and let the GPU client get started fresh after trying to run the display.

They say they are working on getting it fixed for us.

edit: I just realized you are using an ATI card. I don't know if what I just wrote applies to them or not. NVidia cards for sure.

That's the first I'd heard of that Sid, that explains why when I looked at the display the other day it said the core was not running, even though it was.

Modular, looking at your stats something is not quite right, all your WU's are worth 192 points. I've never seen a 192 point GPU2 WU, all the ones I get are 480 points. Can you post a portion of your log file so we can see it and see if all is OK.

If you look here, you can see the project numbers Modular has crunched (4724,4726 & 4728).

Then if you check here, they are listed as GROGPU2.

If you post some of the log like Cutthroat wanted we could also see how long a percent takes so we could figure your PPD accurately.

Looking at your stats you are finishing a WU every three hours - that would be about 1,500 PPD
