New External Hardrive Not Appearing in My Computer/Explorer

I got a new External Harddrive today (Western Digital, 120gb, 2mb cache). I've hooked it up and installed the software and latest patches. And I've tried firewire and USB, but My Computer and Windows Explorer don't recognize the drive as a normal harddisk. I'm running windows XP, and the harddrive is recongized in device manager and as a mass usb/firewire storage device.

Any help would be great, thanks!

Your OS is correct. It's NOT a normal HD. Normal HDs are hooked up thru either the normal IDE/SATA channels, or thru an IDE/SATA/SCSI controller card attached thru the PCI bus.

You have a Mass Storage Device attached thru the USB bus. 🙂 I'm sure your USB HD came w/software that allows you to format/partition it, right?

Hmmm, my usb flash disk pen drive comes up as a normal harddrive without any drivers... I dunno why this would be any different =\
