Interesting. When I worked in a car wash we had a guy bring his DeLorean through weekly. It was much more impressive looking in real life than the pics really show. I wonder how they will bring the old stock up to modern safety standards (air bags, stability control, exploding bumpers).

there was a guy in ahwatukee that drove one regularly. i always asked him if he had taken the panels off to look for coke, but he didnt think it was funny. they are definitely more impressive in person than in pictures.

one day in the distant future if cars become nuclear powered, someone must retrofit a delorean with a real flux capacitor

I think late 80's vans were a little slower than that Sienna.

Even the turbo Chryslers only had 150 horses.

You sound like someone trying to defend his dad who just got beaten up by a grade school girl in a street fight. No matter what excuse you come up with, you're going to come out looking worse on the other side.

The biggest thing that first struck me is how dang small it is in real life - in the movies, Michael J. Fox is pretty short and the car looks normal-sized next to him. In person, I was a pretty tough fit in the car. The top of the doors actually have an indent for your head, lol. It's really very cool seeing it in person though - the pictures definitely don't do it justice. Very unique & cool design.

One of the things that has held me back over the years from buying a Delorean is the safety aspect. It's a Y-frame design, it's made of fiberglass with stainless steel panels instead of all-metal, no airbags, etc. The 40mph crash test is pretty horrific:

I've been hit enough times to want a car with some real safety features, so if they can bump up the safety specs, I'd be real interested. Although I've never talked to a shop willing to put in aftermarket airbags, so...eh. We'll see 😉

He's short in real life too. 😉

I've seen the Delorean in real life. I saw one last week on the freeway in fact. They are interesting but they look dated. Wheels look too small, bumpers look like 1980's parts. It's just not a great car.

They look dated because they're from the 80s and that is the whole point of the car. What next, you're going to complain that a restored 1969 Camaro looks dated?

First drive:

Edit: 260hp electric equivalent 😱

Edit 2: 0 to 60 in 4.9 seconds 😱 😱

gotta admit, that looks way cool

and i hope these succeed, sounds like they have a few innovations that is working out for the good of all. i think my truck does 4.9 seconds between 2nd and 3rd gear...

I'm unclear as to who in their right mind would buy this when a Tesla is about the same price, faster, has more than twice the range, and doesn't look like it was ripped out of 1982.

Hitting 88 miles per hour just doesn't feel the same with any other car. 😎

No gullwing doors = don't care 😛

Emissions in the US killed what little power it had. For it's time, 150HP (Euro spec) was decent. Ford's 4.2L V8 was putting out what, 120HP? Chevy was around the same. The Delorean only had a 2.8 V6 and it made the same if not more power than many V8's of the day.

The 70's and 80's were a terrible period for the car enthusiast due to emissions.

Now I won't argue that today, the engine platform in the Delorean still can't make shit for power. While early 80's V8's can now put out gobs more power and have a huge aftermarket.

They didn't make a lot of HP, but they made a lot of torque, which was why they the V8's were still fun to stop light race.
My 87 TA from the factory only had 225HP, but had 340 ft lbs of torque. More than enough to snap your head back when you stood on it.
