Anyone know what the deal is with New Egg having "This item is warranted through the product manufacturer only" on most of their motherboards.

I had a fairly large order to fill some parts and came across this but now a little leary of ordering from them. Anyone having problems returning DOA or defective boards? Does the 30 day return policy not apply for these items?

The word on the street is that Newegg has been burnt by enough bad boards and abusive RMAs that they needed to institute this new policy. Since I've only heard of it last week though, I'm not sure anyone has tried to see what terms still apply.

Did they have a 1 year warranty with them instead of the mfg prior to this? I always thought it was 30 days and then you are on your own with the manufacturer.

Basically if you buy something that says that, and its messed up, you have to take it up with the manufacturer. I dont think neweggs 30 day warranty is applicable to those products, there is the option to pay like $4 and get the newegg extended warranty (which i'd do) and that will extend your warranty a from just manufacturer's warranty to manu + 1 year newegg warranty...

... I believe this is how it works.

Well if that is what New Egg is doing I will forget about using them from this point on. That would really suck getting a new system in and having to return the motherboard to somewhere is Asia. If they are getting a high rate of returns I would not be suprised if they are reselling them as new and I could therefore see something like the above happening.

I will never forget this one incident I had years ago with a company that we did alot of business with.
I returned hard disk and motherboard at different times in the month. Besides the RMA info I was nice enough to enclose a note for the technicians in the shrink wrap stating exactly what was wrong with the board and disk.

A few months and many orders later I opened up a new hard disk and there was my note. After they promised it would never happen again another mobo arrived a few days later again with my note in it. Probably why they are no longer in business.

I emailed them, here is the reply

If a motherboard is DOA, then you will need to contact the manufacturer first before you come back to us to do an RMA. If it is within 30 days, then it can be a refund RMA. Otherwise, it can only be a replacement RMA (we offer 1-year replacement period). ...if the item (not including CPU and some high value item) is within 30-day refund period, it is up to you to decide which type of RMA you want. Normally, we would prefer that you contact manufacturer first, because they should be able to help you out in most cases. However, if manufacturer fails to do anything for you, you can always come back to us for further help.

Google has nothing about this, so I think you've either been lied to by someone or are trolling.

MB's have the the #1 RMA'd product. Problem is, that when a new build has serious problems, the MB is easy to blame. So it gets returned to Newegg, and Newegg pays to ship it to the manufacturer, and they test it only to find it in perfect working order. Newegg doesn't get a refund and now they have a board that must be sold as refurbished, so they lose money.

This is just my best guess as to what happens. I know it's similar to that and that is why newegg is changing their policy, but mainly just for MB's.
