Do you have other recommendations? Or other places to buy PC parts cheaper?

Thanks!

I just ordered the exact CPU, mobo, RAM, and PSU as you're listing last night. Good to see someone is considering the PSU I got as I was unsure, although I read a few reviews that said goodthings about the PSU. What's the IDE-> SATA converter for? I heard the IDE on the DS3 was flakey, but is it completely worthless?

I have a Lite-on CD writer, a Pioneer DVD drive, and a WD 120GB HD. DS3 only has one IDE connector, so 2 IDE devices only. I need to buy an Serial ATA to IDE Converter for my WD 120GB IDE HD.

Edit: And do you think the Patriot DDR2 667 can run FSB 400? So, I can get 7*400=2800Hz.

Why not dump the WD120 and the SATA->IDE connector and get a 320GB HD? Just a thought that would run through my mind. I am assuming that you are planning on OCing the chip (why get the DS3 if you are not?) and those lovely IDE cables only clog up the airways. Again, just a thought.

I think this looks like a great setup. I think the DS3 is probably the motherboard to go with now. I bought the Abit AB9 -- and really like it -- but it has enough little issues that I think the DS3 is probably the better route. The DS3 is definitely a much better overclocker.

I think your ram is a fine choice. This anandtech review says DDR2-800 works at 2.1v: Link -- and I've found their reviews accurate for my Corsair Valueselect DDR2-667 which I'm running at DDR2-782.

Check ewiz.com for prices, too. I bought stuff from them as they were a little bit cheaper than newegg.com and zipzoomfly on some things. Here is my system (with prices):

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300; $204 (ewiz)
Motherboard: Abit AB9; $140 (ewiz)
Heatsink & Fan: Zalman 9500LED; $60 (Fry's)
Memory: Corsair ValueSelect DDR2-667 2x1GB; $120 (craigslist)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon X850XT; $119.99; $89.99 (AR) (newegg)
Hard Drive: Hitachi 160gb SATA; $79.99; $39.99 (AR) (outpost)
Optical Drive: Lite-On DVD+-R/RW; $31.99 (SD) (newegg)
Case: Antec Super Lanboy; $84.99; $14.99 (AR) (Fry's)
Power Supply: Ultra 500W PS; $79.99; $9.99 (AR) (radioshitshack)

TOTAL: $711

With the new Abit AB9 1.3 Bios, I'm able to get close to 400 MHz FSB with 1.4v on the CPU and 2.2v on the RAM. I'm guessing you'll be faster with the DS3. Some people are seeing as much as 500+ MHz on the FSB, which is impressive!

you should pick up the ds3 and e6300 from newegg most likely. Right now they are giving a 25$ discount if you buy both those items.total cost for the combo is 330$ + shipping. It looks like you might be paying tax though. Mwave and zipzoom fly are $338 and $347 as well for those 2 items.

Yes, but Newegg customer service IS the best, and well worth paying a couple of dollars more. In this case, you say it "comes out about the same". If the price is the same, why not buy from the outfit with the BEST customer service?

Agreed, I dont mind paying a very small amount more to get much better support.

For sound quality alone, that card is the best you can get for cheap. Only thing that sucks is the EAX 2.0, but for listening to music it's known to be an excellent card for audiophiles. This card should be very good for you if you're using it for music and movies, gaming is still very good though just not as good as if you had the Creative cards with EAX 4.0 and all em other features.

i wouldn't bother with the audigy 4. it's basically just an audigy 2 with slightly better DACs, not really any better than the ALC 883 that is integrated into the mobo.
