New DVD releases...

I was looking at deepdiscountdvd.com, and they show the movie "SNEAKERS" as a new release on Jan 02, 2002. WHAT IS UP WITH THAT? I've had that movie for about a year now... maybe 6 months... but regardless, I have the DVD sitting at home. So, what is up with this release?? :|

I also saw at least 2 or 3 other movies that are being "released" in the next 2 months... that are already out. Ok... like the Charlie's Angels Special Edition. I'm not sure if what is out now is the SE, but who the heck cares about the SE if the SE isn't out already. If it is out already, why a second release date?

This is confusing, and makes me wonder if the movies I already have are subpar, and these new movies are remastered or something. I know there are SUPERBIT DVD's making their way out, but that's not what my above questions are referrring too.

Thanks.

If my info is strait... then SUPERBIT is a DVD that has the MOVIE only. No extra and useless crap.

ADVANTAGE: the video/audio can use less compression becuase it has more DVD space available for the actual movie (remember... no EXTRA crap)... and therefor should have better picture and sound.

I think this may be key for those people with large TV's w/progressive scan.... I'm thinking those are the peopel that will benefit most.... People like me. 😀 Plus, I rarely watch that extra crap anyway.

I did some more looking at the DVD website listed in my original post, and maybe the release dates its giving are the dates that the WEBSITE will have the movie... not the date the movie will be released!! Because it has movies like Billy Madison (already have it on DVD). So, since the site is probably growing in popularity... it's just showing the dates it will have certain movies available... and then they just mix it in with all the actual NEW flick. Kind of stupid if that is the real case... anyone else look and give it some thought?

Yeah, Superbit DVDs have no extras, just the movie, the original language audio track, and subtitles for other languages. For example, I have Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Superbit, and it has the original Mandarin DD and DTS tracks only, no crappy dubs.

The video does look better than most DVDs, and I only have a 27inch tube TV. I don't miss the extras since I never watch them...

Yo Suga',

Is the picture significantly better? For example... on yer fav. movie, is it worth punting the original DVD and buying the SuperBit.

I'm a video nazi now that I got my widescreen projection system... so I'm always in search of the best picture. I've tried numerous DVD players... and a few different line doubler, etc. And it just pi$$es me off when a DVD I buy has a grainy, crappy, poorly transfered pricture. AHHHHHH. Case in point: any movie from "HOLLYWOOD PICTURES PRODUCTIONS" or soemthing like that. Grosse Pointe Blank is one expample of a movie from that production company.... video quality sux0rs!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't really like superbit releases.. seem half baked to me. they only make superbit releases of dvds that never had any special features to begin with. i'd much rather buy a superbit release that included a second disc with special features.

late reply... 🙂

Yes, I think the image quality is better on Superbit releases. I guess it depends on the movies, but there's definitely a nice improvement with CTHD. They reencode the movies with roughly twice the average bitrate. You probably won't see much of a difference in scenes that don't have a lot of stuff going on, but for example, in CTHD when they're fighting in the big green trees (walking on the branches), you don't see any of the digital compression in the leaves that was present in the original release, it's crystal clear. That's where it helps the most, when there are a lot of small objects moving on the screen...

Of course not everybody likes not having any extras, but like I said, I personally almost never watch them anyways. I have a few 2 disc sets that the extras DVD has never left the case... The other thing is they only include the original audio track. In most case, it doesn't matter, but for CTHD, the original track is Mandarin. Some people won't like having to read subtitles, but I can't stand watching dubbed movies, so it's fine for me. They also all have both DD and DTS tracks, which is another nice addition.

I don't know if they're worth getting if you already have the original versions... But I could see a difference with my 27" Wega, so I'm sure you'll see some improvement on a bigger TV with progressive scan or projector. I'm a little obsessed about this stuff... 🙂 For example, I wouldn't buy a DVD again because they release a special edition with more extras, but I would if the DVD is a better transfer.
