New DVD burner problems

Ruptga

Motherboard is a p4mbms if it matters. The CD drive just died, so we're replacing it with an Optiarc 18x drive, but we're getting an error, says that it either can't read the cd, or the cd drive is malfunctioning. Anybody familiar with this brand or gotten the same error before?

Edit: I've tried iTunes, WMP, and Winamp, and none of them can play anything. They start to play, but the progress bar flashes and then disappears. I've tried copying files from CD to HDD and they still don't play, but I can get streaming internet radio to play 😕 I'm beginning to think it's some kind of weird software problem, since the drive is definately working.

Edit2: Apparantly Optiarc is a part of NEC, it seems this should be important. Right now we're trying to find the dang jumper settings, but optiarc's website is worthless

Edit3: Have done some digging and found that there have been the same problems we're getting when the BIOS is trying to run it in UDMA mode, ever heard of this happening before? How much slower will running it in PIO mode be?

Just installed an Optiarc x18 (doesn't make me an experty though).

Where are you getting the error? In explorer, or control panel?

What os?

Did you check the jumper setting on the drive before you plugged in?
Can you check it is plugged in,

BUT FIRST, try some different CD/DVD that you know are working. (sorry for stating the obvious)

Last drive was just plain old. OS is XP, and we got the error in WMP 11. We've played around with it and can explore the drive, ie open up the disk in My Computer, but we can't play music off of the drive. I didn't think to check jumper settings, but it's plugged into the master end of the cable.

Does the wmp pretend like it is playing music?
If so, then the cable that goes between the back of the Optiarc and the sound card isn't plugged in.

Can you try a different media player - vlc is good.
If you get music with a different player then we can narrow down problem to WMP.

Right now I'm doing a virus and adware scan, we'll see what shows up. My sisters aren't that intelligent about computers, and their stupid friends even less so, like I said, we'll see what shows up.

Going back to the error you got in wmp,

Can you go to control panel - Administrative tools - event viewer.
Look for the errors relating to the problem.

Post back with the EVENT ID, SOURCE, and the FULL TEXT DESCRIPTION.

Under System, there's a whole mess of Service Control Manager entries, and then a WMPNetworkSvc, event ID 14204, Source is WMPNetworkSvc, and the description is "Service 'WMPNetworkSvc' started."

Oh yeah, and I don't suppose you could try this drive in another system could you?
Or, try another drive in this system.

Could you post a hijackthis log.
Might be able to see if there is other software running in the background that might be responsible.

I've got a hijackthis log, how do I post it here? I've used photobucket for images, but I've never had to post text before. I mean I could just post the log, but it's obviously huge.

Hi,
Firstly,
Are you using Mcafee antivirus AND avg?
If yes, disable the AVG - maybe uninstall would be good.
Only have one AV running on a system.

secondly,
There are a couple of suspect items.
You can see yourself by going to:
http://www.hijackthis.de/#anl
and pasting the log.

Yeah.. basically it's a frankenputer, a nine year old HP case and HDD that's had everything else changed out. When I changed the motherboard we had problems getting Windows to cooperate, and I still don't remember what I found, but I used some reinstall/repair thing that HP had on the HDD. All the files were where they were supposed to be, and Windows didn't get mad about the new motherboard, but McAfee was borked, and is to this day, so I downloaded AVG since we're still not sure if McAfee is working right, or at all for that matter. I tried to fix it for a while, but it's just borked, so we decided to give up since it's still kicking.

Anyway, I'll send this info to the folks (I was just down for the weekend and mom surprised me with a DVD drive install). SweetIM looked suspect to me, but I couldn't find where to install it and didn't figure it would mess with the DVD drive, was there something else you saw that looks like it has something to do with this?

No, didn't see anything that would relate directly to your problem, but I still wouldn't use that system for online banking!

I would really consider a backup/format/reinstall of everything in the right order.
But, it would take you the best part of a day, and many many phonecalls for the next 2 years about how everything looks different and how do you do this or that cos it all looks different and where can i find this cos it all looks different.

Yes, too many family members have passed their computer to me to 'make it faster' and stop 'all these popups'.

Hmmm, that definately would rule out any software-related problems... and I'm almost entirely sure it's a software problem. I'll pass this on and see what they think

Have done some digging and found that there have been the same problems we're getting when the BIOS is trying to run it in UDMA mode, ever heard of this happening before? How much slower will running it in PIO mode be?

I wouldn't worry if your DVD is in PIO mode - as long as it PIO 4 or higher.

UDMA is 100MB/sec which your dvd would never reach, and in fact, most hdd's don't reach either.
