Currently running an Athlon 700Mhz CPU on an Abit KT7 motherboard with 256MB PC133 RAM. Now I have seen a Duron 1.3GHz for not a lot of money. Now will it go in this board and is it a noticeable speed increase.

Also running GF3ti etc.

Cheers

wait.. aren't Duron 1.3 GHz cpu's the "Morgan" based CPU's (derivative of the Palomino?) rather than the Spitfire (Thunderbird)? I don't think the original KT133 based mobo's support anything beyond Thunderbird/Spitfire AMD cpu's... You might have to buy a new mobo in order to upgrade to a new CPU.. sorry to break it to you man

The 1.3GHz Duron should work, just make sure you flash the board to the latest BIOS with the Athlon first. I've had no problems running the new core Durons on different brand KT133 boards(got a few running in even older Gigabyte GA-7IXE4s using the AMD irongate chipset).

So you reckon it'll work. Cool as I am also looking at it as a possible present for a friend.

What performace gain will I see going from a 700MHz Athlon to a 1.3GHz Duron.

So if I can find a spitfire duron then I should be ok. Does anyone know what speed they go up to?

I think 950MHz, anything higher uses the Morgan core. If you don't want to use a Morgan Duron you could always get a faster Athlon B(they topped out at 1400MHz).
