My new compaq pIII 733 comes with dsl service. My TIadsl monitor program tells me that I cant get more than 384kbps downstream. I get my service through swbell/prodigy, but my friends just down the street who get it through just swbell get nearly 5 times the downstream that i get. Can anyone tell me why this is, or what i can do to get better speeds?

You , or your service provider should contact your carrier to see if your line is capped.

is your friend closer to the dsl central office than you are? that may account for the difference.

I tried to call swbell and find out what the deal was, but i got transfered around for over a half-hour so i hang up. and as far as location, they just built a new dsl/optics station less than 60 feet from my house, so i should be blazing. My friends live 6+ blocks away, and they still are killing me in speed.

other than distance, another factor which would affect your download speed which is relevant here is the quality of the phoneline (the actual wire) which connects you to the CO.

of course another factor is the server to which you are connected.

programs that measure your download or your upload speed are not as accurate as you think they are...

Interesting. I have SWbell/prodigy DSL too. Their tech support picked up within 3minutes. They actually fixed my problem too (DELL crap didn't like software so they pointed me to a DL). I get 1.5Mbps-1.8Mbps sustained downloads. It's supposed to be capped at 1.5 though :)

Couple things that could be happening here:

1) They may have capped download speeds at your CO. If your friends are on a different CO, they may not be capped, or may be capped at a higher speed.

2) You may be too close to the CO. It's possible for the signal from the CO to basically drown the line, & result in slower speeds than if you were further away. When you do talk to tech support, ask them if you can reduce the transmit power setting on your modem. That may help you out.

3) You could simply be further from the CO than your friends are. Linear distance doesn't mean jack in DSL, it's all about wire length. If your neighborhood was built after your friends', & they're earlier on the line than you are, they could get better rates. The phone company should be able to tell you what your wire length is to the CO, & what your friends' are as well.

Good luck...
