new Dream theater song leaked on youtube

who's drumming?

that's funny that he's able to write good drum parts; afaik petrucci can't actually play drums- didn't he drum for 'nightmare cinema' performances? it was pretty awful, lol, you can watch portnoy cringe while he bashes his stuff.

listening to this now...

edit: drummer in youtube link sorry

AFAIK, he sequenced everything, then the new drummer, Mike Mangini came in and played them. Of course he added his own flair, but Petrucci had already laid out the timings, changes, etc.

The entire album leaked yesterday or the day before or something. Lots of people are fapping over it being an improvement over their last few albums and about how Portnoy was holding them back and whatever, but the song Bridges in the Sky at least sounds like typical Dream Theater to me.

alright time for a new post in case this has sunk down even one thread.

FUCKING AWESOME DT DT <3 <3. i will miss the shit out of portnoy, and hope that this is only temporary- he was the soul of that fucking band.

OP, labries vocals aren't much different from their last two albums. check them out if you haven't.

my worry was that the quality would go down without portnoy...still on the first song here, i mean, it's good and i love DT, but there isn't anything 'special' to this. the more i listen now, the more it feels like the entire percussion section is missing from an orchestra. =(

Lost Not Forgotten and Breaking All Illusions are the highlights of the album. The rest of them are certainly good tracks as well with the exception of Build Me Up, Break Me Down... a lot of WTF going on in that one.

They gotta dump the keyboard player or at least tell him to stick to texture. Those keyboard leads sound so cheesy.

I think BC&SL is far better. The only song that puts me to sleep from BC&SL is The Best of Times (Portnoy lyrics). I feel bored in more of the new songs. I was going to buy the deluxe version, but think I'll stick with the special edition.

I can use that extra money to pay for the overpriced Adrenaline Mob EP off MP's site. 5 songs for $18 is just madness...

best of times is an awesome song, it just takes the some listens. the middle may drag but it's quite pretty. and the intro + john petrucci's like five minute 'outro' solo...fuck. only thing they did wrong was ending on a fadeout, i can't believe band's like DT will do that on a record.

also to me 'portnoy lyrics' = shattered fortess, et al.

did they ever lose that 80's vibe? i havnt heard this band since that dreams and dreaming album or whatever its called.

Man Dream Theater gets me conflicted. I arrived at them because I loved LeBries performance on the Ayreon albums, but his vocals just don't seem to work in DT.

'when dream and day unite'? that was released at the end of the 80's, lol. they changed singers between that album and the next, then keyboard players, then keyboard players again (jordan rudess joined in 99 i think).

they are the type of band whose sound has changed drastically, yet always remained stylistically 'dream theater.' even their 'worst' albums are full of gems.

ironically, when dream and day unite is pretty much shit imo. some decent songs, but the singer sucks and the album just isn't produced well.

i'm not familiar with the other band, but give me an idea of the kind of DT that seems most appealing to you and i'd be happy to recommend some stuff.

DT is just one of those great bands that can totally put someone off forever at first listen. in many cases, these people would actually have a lot more interest in them if they just heard some more varied material.

it's like not being a metalhead and someone handing you a copy of 'blackwater park' and saying 'man, this album is beautiful!' you'd probably have that person committed.

I've listened to the album a couple dozen times and still can't get into that song. It's just a personal preference.

Thanks for posting this. I'm not a huge metal fan, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. Will look into their previous stuff a bit more now I think.

okay...i am going to have to give that a listen.

just by the description, i would immediately say to try metropolis pt2. it is an extremely varied concept album that is quite frankly one of the best ~70 minute listening experiences out there. if you're heavy into prog, six degrees of inner turbulence (both the titular 42 minute A side the the collection of long proggy B sides) is epic...but it almost takes physical effort to listen to the first time or two. it's like the first time i listened to opeth- that shit was draining.

'when dream and day unite'? .

the one i'm thinking of has a song called "Pull me under". i liked that whole album back then, but hearing it now, the singer sounds pretty 80'ish. like reminds me of Skid Row singer or something so hard for me to get into that style anymore.

they are amazingly talented at their instruments though, like crazy talented. they just need a modern singer if the don't already have one. again i havnt heard any of their newer music but i heard their kind weird opera'ish now.

*wait, maybe i should just click the link in the first post and have a listen. lol

I totally disagree. I can't imagine another singer (I didn't care for Dominici) as the lead vocalist for DT. He has sounded great on every album including the covers. His vocals work well with a vast majority of their work.

Side note: When I met him a couple years ago, I complemented him on his vocals for Stargazer. It's easily one of my favorite covers.
