Ya I just saw that too. I wonder if they use the same power supply for the x300SE as they use for the x850XT. They much be el cheapo and use a weaker psu.

Yes, all 9100's will come with the same PSU.

Darn it - I was all set to order a new 9100 with a 19" Ultrasharp LCD and then I see this new deal. I mean, I really have no need for 24" monitor, but I have been doing a lot of video editing and multitasking of late. So what do you all think ? Here's the system I'm leaning towards:

Dell 9100
Pentium D 2.8 Dual Core
XP Pro
1 Gig
250 GB SATA
16x DVD+-RW
128 MB PCI Express
SB Audigy and 5.1 speakers

With a 19" Dell 1905FP Ultrasharp, it's $1607
With a 24" Dell 2450FPW, it's $2107

That's a pretty tempting price ....

I guess my decision now is the sock in the gut when I get my credit card bill in a couple of weeks, versus the potential regret down the road if I have to live with my "tiny" little 19" monitor. All I know is I felt like the heavens opened and angels were singing when I went from a 17" CRT to a 19" CRT.

Elvindeath - Do not spend the mony on XP pro, or get the DVD burner there!

I would also recommend skipping the 250 gig SATA drive and buying one yourself. Get the 80 gig for your boot drive and add only $20. Then, get the 6800 video card instead, which is actually a decent deal.

You did this through the outrageous deals link, right? Because I configured one just like what you said but with the 6800 instead and it came out to $2100 after rebate!

You can get the DVD-RW $50 cheaper (newegg) if you do it yourself (well worth it in my opinion) and if you spend $20 to upgrade the main HD and then add another for $120 (hitachi sata 250 gb from newegg) and get 330gb of storage on 2 drives for the same price! IMHO, 2 HD's greatly increases the overall smooth feel of a computer.

So, take off 120 for XP pro, and 50 for the DVD-RW and you come to $1950 for a computer with a decent vid card, more storage, 2x HD's and 2xOptical drives for less than you were going to spend in the first place! I didn't include tax or shipping, because I have no idea how that would work out for you.

My take on the available upgrades and such:

*The Pentium D 820 is probably worth the extra $100.

*XP Pro is worth it if you need it. Yes, it's $120, but that's roughly the price for an upgrade/OEM copy anyways. However, if you're a student, you can find it as an upgrade for cheaper.

*I'm not sure what the going price for DDR2 is, so I'm not going to comment there.

*The upgrade to the 80GB HDD for $20 is worth it. The 160GB isn't really bad either for $60 (and no MIR other than the one you were going to do anyways). But blckgrffn is definitely right on the 250GB- better to do the upgrade to 80GB and buy another 250GB separately.

*blckgrffn is also right on the drives. Top of the line NEC and BenQ drives are available for under $50, and are therefore much more worth your while to buy separately.

*Neither of the video card upgrades is worth it- you can get a 6800 for $180 or less and sell the X300, and X850XT is rediculous seeing as the 7800GTX is available (or has been anyways) for not much more.

You can't get a PCIe 6800 for $180, no sir :) More like $250 if you want any selection at all. PCIe is whole different ball game.

Why do you want XP Pro? So you can bridge between two LANs? Get the pretty background and Pro screen saver? Home should be fine for 99.9% of home users/students out there, just go into safe mode, log into the admin account and change the password when you get it :) Also, your college, if you are a student, may have XP pro licesnses ($5-$20) for dirt cheap if you really want to go that route.

If you really want that to be a good machine, just get the basic x300 and use the other Dell deal to get the BFG7800GTXOC for like $463. To play new and upcoming games decently at 1920x1200 you'll need the 7800. If you need a computer AND a montior it would be pretty dumb to pass up this deal. Only thing that is bad is Dell does not use AMD, yet :(

check tech bargains for the coupon code for the BFG.

Thanks for the advise, blckgrffn. I'll think on it.

I'm aware I can shave some costs off on those add-ons, but weighing cost versus my time, I'm happy to say I'm at a point in my life where I'm slightly more concerned about my time. I figure paying Dell for the HD and DVD upgrades at a fair premium is worth it, since I won't have to screw around shopping for, installing, and configuring the drives.

I'm keeping the stock 128 MB ATI video card because I don't really game on my PC anymore, so it should be able to handle what I need ... and if it doesn't, I'd rather shop for a custom card that I like and get that aftermarket.

I'm all but sold on the 24" monitor though (that didn't take much). Luckily I just got an unexpected $850 from a life insurance policy I had to cash in, so in my twisted world, it's like I'm getting this machine for only $1150 !!

Now the only question is how do I rationalize a 24" widescreen monitor to my wife, rather than getting AC installed in our new house ? Hmm. I'll have to think on that one.

Anyone have any opinion on XP Media Center Upgrade rather than Pro ? I'm thinking about it because I really do use the PC more as a digital photo / video editing / file server more than anything else.

Wow, good luck convincing the wife on that one! For the record though, I am the AC nut in this household ;)

A dvd burner will take tops 15 minutes to install, please at least reconsider that :)

How are you getting to that price? You must be looking in a wrong place. I am looking at the same config with a 19" LCD for $1248 after the $100 rebate before tax. I am guessing the 24" deal will be ~$550 more, or ~$1800. That's a huge difference with what you are looking at.

Cyberia - I was just going through the Outrageous Deals link, and customizing the system. That is pre-tax price, at least what I come out with. Are you applying any coupons or anything ? I don't have any, so my price is right off the SB site.

As for AC > LCD, man, it's all about priorities. Where I live (Michigan), I can count on one hand the number of "really hot" days we've had in the last 2 years. On the other hand, I use my computer (and watch my 60" HDTV) just about every day. Just talked to the the wife, though, and it appears the only way I get the LCD is if we get AC and a new kitchen table. Anyone know a good Heating & Cooling guy in the Detroit area : )

That's what I did too, and I get a much lower price without any coupons. Unless of course you are adding some software packages or an extended warranty.

Cyberia - nope. Here's exactly what I did to get my price.

1. Go to Dell SB, click Outrageous Deals on the 9100 w/ 24" LCV

2. Customize as follows:

Pentium D 820 (2.8 GHz)
Win XP Pro
1 GB DDR2 533 MHz
No Exteneded Warranty
Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
250 GB Serial ATA 7200 RPM
Dual Drives: 16x DVD+/-RW + 16 x DVD Rom
24 " Ultrasharp Widescreen
128 MB PCI Express x16 ATI Radeon 5300 SE
SB Audigy 5.1
5.1 Dell 100 Watt Surround

No other software.

I've done it twice, and get $2107. Called their home sales line and talked to a rep I've used before who ran the numbers and couldn't come within $300 of that price (even before the rebate)

Yep. I was missing the wireless KB, Audigy and speakers and maybe some other minor stuff. You are pretty much looking at an under-$1000 deal if a $750 off $1500 coupon comes out. Maybe even an $850 deal (not including the LCD). I would not spend $2100 on the deal.

I think the Outrageous Deal configs are good as is. If you try to add upgrades, it ends up costing you. Right now, the same system with a 24" LCD is only $200 more on Dell Home and ~$250 more on SB. I would not call a 10% saving an Outrageous Deal.

I hear what you're saying ... I've only been on the prowl for a new system for about a month, but I've been pricing this same setup since then, and this is about $400 less than I've seen it so far. For the last 2 weeks, $2100 would have gotten me the same system, but with a standard 19" Flat Panel. I'll take the 24" monitor for the same price and consider myself lucky. $2000 ain't a bad deal, and it'll be a pretty sizeable improvement over my old system.

For what it's worth, I'm looking at my invoice from my Dell 8100 (purchased 2/7/01) and back in the day, for $1971 you could get a P4-1.4 Ghz, 256 MB RDRAM, 12x DVD-Rom, SB Live! Value, 32MB DDR ATI Radeon, and a 60MB HD. All of that is a bargain considering we spent $3300 (1979 dollars) on an Apple ][ (#122) that didn't even have a floppy drive, $4000 for an IBM PC in the early 80's (whopping 256K), and $2000 on a 10 MB Hard Drive (who could ever fill that thing up??).

Gotta love gadgets for the masses.

Even if they do, there is no way anything changes soon. The lawsuit will take easily a year (an optimistic estimate), then PC makers who are not using AMD chips will need time to design and produce new systems.

And then AMD's CPU prices might not drop as fast as they usually do because of the additional demand and not necessarily any available extra capacity. But I am just guessing, I am not an insider in that business.

If you think about it, Dell has very few systems, and not that many options. I do not think their business model can work as well with a wider PC/server lineup. They might not be interested in AMD even if there is no pressure from Intel to stick to Intel's chips.
