New DiamondMax 10 300GB - Strange Noises!

So I just got a 300GB DiamondMax 10 from Newegg...

Good part - it's VERY fast. Even compared to the 2 Raptors it replaced.

Bad part - the noises it makes are VERY strange, unlike any other HDD I've had.

The noises only occur during access, and resemble extremely fast clicks and metallic grinds. Normally, the drives I've had simply drone at the same level. However, this is high-pitched, and VERY fast.

Am I right in assuming this is the spindle moving over the huge 100GB platters? I just want to make sure this drive is not-DOA before I lose all of my data.

If Maxtor has a disk testing utility for this drive, which they should, I'd run it and see if it comes up with errors.

Strange noises are not good imo, but I've never had one of these drives.

Never buying a Maxtor again. Had three drives go out on me compared to half a dozen flawless WD's and a couple flawless seagates over the years.

Luckily their RMA process is a peice of cake. Should be, because they're pretty used to it.

Well, has anyone else gotten one of these?

I'm really looking for input from fellow owners. Mayhbe these new ones just sound like that.
