New Diamond 7970 whining sound

UNhooked

Hey guys so I jumped on the 7970 deal by Diamond for $300 and very happy with the purchase. I even managed to get a good card with ASIC of 85.5% and does do the GHZ bios without any issues.

The problem is that the card tends to produce a high pitch whining sound whenever I am running any benchmarks like 3dMark 11 or AVP etc.

I am aware of the coil sound that ATI cards exhibit when loading benchmarks but never during the actual benchmark run.

Any thoughts? Explanations?

I bought 7970s at release (sold them since) that had slight coil whine when vsync was off, yet it (strangely) went away after about 4-5 days. Not sure how that happened. Generally it won't happen when you have vsync on. Anyway, you could try giving it a few days or if it doesn't rectify itself i'd exchange it. Coil whine is very very annoying to me, I don't think i'd put up with it.

Its coil whine, it happens when a company uses lower quality chokes. Its not harmful by any means, just annoying.

FYI AMD cards aren't the only ones that coil whine 🙂

Did you had to put the cards through some load in those 4-5 days or did it just go away without taking any action?

I heard it whenever GPU was at load and vsync was turned off. When vsync was on it didn't happen. It was very very faint though, i've definitely heard louder coil whine from old 8800s. It went away after roughly a week. If it had persisted I would have RMA'ed them.

Cool I'll give it a week or so. Hopefully it works out since I do like the card. How are cards in general from Diamond? My first time buying from them.

My Diamond 7970 was making a weird noise which I assumed was coil whine. It seems to have stopped, been folding and gaming with it for two weeks now.

I've been mining on my two Diamond 7970's for a day now. No whine that I can hear. Of course the two fans sound like a jet engine so they might just be drowning out the noise. 🙂
