Just posting the news. If you only want one side of the story, you need to go elsewhere. I think it's important to get all of the news, not just what you want to hear.

lol you're not my type either!

Don't give me the whole I don't want bad ATI news deal. It's just that I'm kinda annoyed that you only break bad ATI news...

Personally like always I'm eyeing mainstream card from Nvidia. Since their Vista drivers are slightly better than garbage, I'm willing to go with ATI provided their midrange has comparable performance figures.

Pricing to performance as well will be the key for me,I'm in the unusual boat of being able to afford a midrange or top end card,so depending on pricing and performance between Nvidia and AMD I'll make my mind up then, roll on March/April.

well then let me post *good news* for DAAMiT fans

R600 up and running, making ATI partners happy
The GDDR4 version and the official launch is still scheduled for March time probably shortly before Cebit. The partners are happy with the performance and they are confident that the new baby can make G80 run for its pixels.

The first R600 with GDDR3 memory was a huge card, the biggest ever built but the GDDR4 version will end up a bit shorter. The first R600 was significantly longer than Nvidia's G80.

AMD to launch R600 in Amsterdam, in March
Some 200 hacks from 45 countries will be invited to attend this event. With the power of DAAMIT this will be the biggest and most glamourous graphics chip launch to date.
...

Some Nvidia green is about to get smoked as we heard R600 with some software tweaks will actually be faster than we all anticipated. The launch is definitely in March as Hector said so.

VR-Zone is oh so old news and is the *SOURCE* for your silly 2nd hand news at TechReport :p

R600 will be launched in CeBIT but cards availability in April ... and we heard that the official name could be Radeon X2900.
yeah ... they *heard* it from theInq

Sweet, I've been looking for an upgrade. I really want to handle Crysis fully. :D

Yeah, but what they're not saying is that G81 will be a mere 2-3 months behind R600 if it indeed launches in March and then some DAMMIT red will get smoked. Considering the fact that Nvidia has a huge head start on DAAMIT in the DX10 market, DAAMIT really needs the R600 to be a winner.

Let's hope DAAMIT has really good drivers from the beginning, or G81 might show up before R600 has viable drivers.

ATI already has experience with unified shader arc. with the xbox 360. This is really the next gen of the 360's gpu. No one knows for sure....we can only wait & see...

Yeah right..then why not show the benchmarks now to head off all those emergency orders NV is making for their chips cause they can't keep up with demand? Not to mention record profits. Remember, like Intel did to with conroe 6 months before launch and had people holding off their X2 purchases. I'll believe it when i see it..ATI has been months late and frames short for too long for me to believe they smoke anything besides hashish...probably accounting for their tardiness.

i will also believe it when i see it ... won't be long now ... i'd guess a couple of weeks --tops -- we will see the leaked benchs ... then *more details* ... the launch is only a 4 weeks away

this topic is to show the *new details emerging*

with AMD firmly holding the Leash, at least the boys at ATi will have a better *grade* of hashish

Well, if you'll recall, Nv was pretty good at keeping all the G80 info leaks to a minimum as well. Heck, they even kept saying it wasn't a unified architecture until the very end. I'm not sure why both companies want to keep such tight wraps on their new products, but they must have their reasons.

Is this marketing speak for the biggest power guzzling pig out there? Personally I would settle for a company that reduces power usage.

If the R600 comes out and beats the 8800GTX pretty handily (10%+ with equal or better IQ), I'll sell my 8800GTX to get one. So if someone really loves nvidia and wants a pretty good deal on an 8800 when the R600 comes out, let me know :)

Well Nv had competing products out at the time they wanted to liquidate like the 7900 GX2 and 7900 GTX. If they leaked too much they just undercut their own high end sales in addition to ATI's. ATI doesn't have this "problem" or dilemma currently:p

True, but at the time the X1950XTX was one of the top performers. It was the overall fastest single-GPU card available and even swapped benchmark victories with the dual-GPU 7950GX2. Plus the price of the X1950XT was significantly less than that of the GX2.

I'm sure Nvidia was anxious to get the G80 to market and take the crown (and associated sales) away from ATI. I'm also sure ATI is just as anxious to try and reclaim the top spot (and associated sales) back from Nvidia.

So why Nvidia or ATI wouldn't "accidentally" slip "confidential" specs or benchmarks to persuade enthusiasts to hold off on their high end video card purchase is beyond me.

"9" PCB retail R600 version is priced at US$599 while the 12" version is meant for OEM once again. "

I dont understand....will the 9" version be slower than the 12"? If not, how will they cool the retail version if the heatsink takes up the full size of the pcb? $599 for their top end r600 model is not bad! Isnt that cheaper than when the g80's first came out?

Intel is currently using more power with no step down for idle. High tech should be leading the way in reducing our consumption, instead of giving up pathetic bits about the fps - power ratio. Anyways the r600 is sounding to me like the same old same old. A new player would be very welcome at this time.

where do you get this info?

it looks like power consumption won't be [much] worse than the 8800

and you've heard the expression *power user* ?
... even in gaming

:D

until last year *More Power* sold American cars and trucks ... not *economy*
[stupid, yes]
but look at how the Video card makers copy the car makers even to the Suffixes ...
GT ... GTX ... XL .. XT ... limited .... and AMD names their upcoming CPU after the great races ...

i guess you're waiting for Al Gore's "really Green" GPUs :p

This march towards bigger screens (using more power) to get the benefit of using more power is old school. Time for the computer geeks to wake up and understand real world science. Not too conversant of Al Gore, but "An Inconvenient Truth" is interesting. He did seem to do alot of flying though. Anyways I am sure if the industry works on using less power - less power will be used. I am still shocked to read that vista uses more power than xp at idle. These guys are living in the past and best get onside before finding themselves out.
