March 1... new info:

original article here: http://www.hardspell.com/doc/hardware/34620.html
how's your Chinese?

R600 Clocks Higher Than 800MHz

Hardspell is reporting that R600 GDDR3 card uses 12 layers PCB while the R600 GDDR4 card uses 12-16 layers PCB. The silicon for R600 only reaches A13 revision and there are no A14, 15 or 17 revisions. According to them, currently all the ATi R600 benchmarks out there aren't real and R600 core clock is not lower than 800MHz. VR-Zone has learned about some updates on R600 availability. Apparently R600 GDDR3 will be available in early May while R600 GDDR4 will be available in mid May but in limited quantities. We will see some R600 demos at CeBIT but behind doors.

R600 delayed again

Pushed over into Q2

WE JUST had a call from DAAMIT and we learned that its R600 presentation and introduction is pushed to a later date. It won't happen before Cebit, nor any time this quarter.

It is pushed back for launch in Q2 and this comes officially from AMD. Hector won't be happy as he made the promise for a Q1 launch.

look like *aloha* for DAAMiT

EDIT
here's the latest on g81:

the latest:

Feb 2

R600 up and running, making ATI partners happy
The GDDR4 version and the official launch is still scheduled for March time probably shortly before Cebit. The partners are happy with the performance and they are confident that the new baby can make G80 run for its pixels.

The first R600 with GDDR3 memory was a huge card, the biggest ever built but the GDDR4 version will end up a bit shorter. The first R600 was significantly longer than Nvidia's G80.

AMD to launch R600 in Amsterdam, in March
Some 200 hacks from 45 countries will be invited to attend this event. With the power of DAAMIT this will be the biggest and most glamourous graphics chip launch to date.
...

Some Nvidia green is about to get smoked as we heard R600 with some software tweaks will actually be faster than we all anticipated. The launch is definitely in March as Hector said so.

that is a big *OOps**

i posted with *blank*

here's the details
is full a 12 inches long (30cm). This baby is dubbed XTX, and will feature-top-of-the-line, 1GB GDDR-4 memory from Samsung. You can count on 16 memory chips yielding 1GB of video memory connected to the GPU via 512-bit external bus. Memory chips could do 2.4GHz clock (1.2GHz physical), yielding in yet unseen bandwidth of 153.6 GB/s, dwarfing 8800GTX and its 86.4 GB/s. However, this clock is not guaranteed - not everything is in the bandwidth, but rather in the way you use it.

Second variant is in the prime rib categoryL more compact its big T-bone brother, on a size level with R580 (X1950XTX) and G80GTS (8800GTS) boards. We're talking about "X2x00 XT", which is pretty much the same thing as XTX, featuring only a speed downgrade. The speed downgrade enabled DAAMIT to put a more compact PCB, nine inches in length but still featuring the same amount of GDDR-4 memory. Depending on the price and availability of GDDR-4, this one will be available in 512MB variant as well. You know, X1900XT 512/256MB, only one GPU generation ahead.

The third one, let's call it sirloin steak, is sort of X1800XL style ("X2x00XL"). We're talking about still GDDR-4 memory, but a new 9-inch PCB. Nope, this is not a downgraded PCB from the already-mentioned XT part, we're talking about a board which will feature "normal" clocks and be available for OEMs to do wonderous display output things with. Multimedia addicts will be happy with the whole array of possibilities, thanks to the fact that ATI killed its decade old ViVo chip. Single-slot ahoy.

Fourth class, mignon filet, is dubbed X2000GT, and this is a product which will feature most of the non-100% QA chips around. The PCB is once again new and does not derive from above mentioned three models - but still inside the 9 inches of length (three different 9-inch versions, guys really like the number). This baby was codenamed UFO, and had a very difficult birth: it was introduced, then shafted, then re-introduced into the pipe again ? and this is the R600 chip combined with cheap and massively available GDDR-3 memory. This will be the ground for GPGPU boards as well, since AMD plans for both 1GB and 2GB versions of the boards. 2GB versions are of course, reserved for the high-end, professional market.

Now, here comes the fun part: of products mentioned here, three require a new power connector, the 8-pin one. The 8-pin was also the reason that ATI managed to get its models in 9-inch size, but we already wrote about that one. Top brass, the XTX - does not care for 8-pins, it wants dual 6-pin rails, just like the 8800GTX. Boards will come with adapters, or you need one of these babies.

When it comes to cooling these monsters down, you will be happy to learn that AMD developed a single-slot solution as well

and from the 2nd linked article:

R600 will have a big air cooler
WE LEARNED that upcoming R600 still uses an air cooler. It can do the job without the aid of water.

We know that DAAMIT has been experimenting with Air ? water cooler hybrid. This is even more efficient and includes a small pump on the graphics card heatsink.

It is a nice concept but the stock version of R600 will come out with an air cooler.

The card is still on schedule for Q1, probably March launch time, Cebitish. The samples are ready and press kit should be ready in late February.

Of course it is a dual-slot cooler as you really need a lot of fan power to cool the beast. But it will be quiet, as quiet as G80's.

Single slot ... relatively low power requirements . . . 1GB DDR4 vRAM ... outrageous bandwith ... what's not to like?

the XTX is probably the same MSRP as the 8800gtx --if past launches are an indication

'ATi guys' have got to be a little *excited* about now ... especially after nvidia's outstanding effort... looks like it may have been worth a wait. ;)

good night ... i'll check back in the am

thought everyone would be interested in the first real news of r600 - beside silly rumors like the 300w Power Consumption BS

*rubs hands together gleefully*

Super news! Competition = lower prices for everyone.:)

I'll give it a couple of months after the release, let all the websites do their testing and shootout comparos...and wait for the prices to drop $150 from release price. Then I'll buy something.

I've always had a mix of ATI and NVidia cards...whatever is the best bang for the buck at the time of purchase is what side of the fence I fall on.

You are wrong, because Ati never raised the MSRP in a new gen of cards.. Nvidia is the one who does it... Even when the 9700 PRO came out and kicked everything, it still had the same MSRP (399$ right?) as GF 4 had when it was launched, but everytime nvidia releases something new they have to add 50$ to the price, and thats why its already on 649$

So, who is your connection that we should take your "you'll see" for gospel. I for one would feel better knowing you have a reliable source if your gonna make me hold onto my GTX money a little longer and see what happens.

It's nice to see more information, but until a more reliable source comes forward to verify I think I'll have to file this one away under 'Rumors'.

I thought it was only the OEM board that was the full 12" long and the retail cards were going to be 9". Now they're saying that the retail flagship card is 12" with the rest of the lineup being 9"?

I realize they're just rumors, but it'd be nice if we could settle even just the physical size of the thing. :p

my *source* has always been my ability to read carefully and "put things together" ;)

feel completely free to buy a 8800gtx ... with my *blessing*
:D

and there is no way you could be disappointed ... either way

if you need a GPU now ... why wait?
the 8800gtx is an awesome card.

use you own judgement

The thing is AMD/Ati has lost so many buyers who would have brought R600 based cards. The situation has changed now, it?s a cheap strategy you know releasing their products with higher specifications just to compete with G80- I think they?ve studied how G80 works and then tweaked their *GPU?s* to make it run better and also by doubling it every detail (including size which is 30 cm long). Naturally R600 is going to be the winner at the end of the day- no doubt R600 is a great card and fan boys will surely buy it. Benchmarks are not needed it?s a known fact - it will prolly run faster than G80 in SLI. Now since ATI is AMD, the price will be according to AMD standards. There is no such thing as ?worth waiting? in the world of computers you have to make the best of what you have (unless you like spending money on hardware every 2 months) or do you want to wait for one year to get that new Octo Core?

I remember when i used to look at games first and think "wow!, what hardware do i need to play that maxed out at high rez?....I'll buy whatever i need!".

Now we're all drooling over specs b4 the hardware is released, then we jump on the hardware at release and play our old games a second time waiting for new ones that usually dont show up until the "next" graphic card is released...etc...etc..

I Miss the old days where video cards came bundled with new games that showed off your new card.

With that said, i have an 8800GTX and i want an R600 (X2000) too! :D

Man, do i ever need a new hobby. LOL

Company of Heroes goes DirectX 10

End of March

By Fuad Abazovic: Friday 19 January 2007, 12:24
GOLLY, THERE might be a game that will have DirectX 10 support, coming in late Q1 2007.

If all goes well Company of Heroes should get the DirectX 10 patch by the end of March 2007. It might be the first commercial and available game to use the DirectX 10 rendering and the benefits of the DirectX 10 hardware.

DirectX 10 patch will make the game look better as some eye munchies are possible with Direct X 10 only. The patch will make the rendering faster and the game should run quicker too. Overall you might not see the benefits in Frames per second as the new patch will do more then the DirectX 9 version of the game. The performance should level up but the game will look better.

We will keep our fingers crossed for late March patch release.

:)

This is exciting to see a chip with such power, even through rumor.

However, let me say that it is impossible to match the G80 for the power consumption (Not to say that the G80 is too low, but rather the R600 is just going to be too high). The R600 has a 512bit external bus, and an extra 360MB of memory. Not only that but it was hot enough that they were considering including a water pump with the card.

Sorry, this is going to be an absolute killer for a chip if any of these rumors are correct (Keep in my the X1800XT rumors and how that panned out) but it is going to come at a big cost in heat and power consumption.

i believe we're a little *beyond rumour* now

these cards are *samples* ... the Reviewer cards get sent out evidently next month ... so the details will only get clearer ... just as with the GTX

i seriously *doubt* theInq is making all this up ... it appears that some 'blabbermouth' actually got to *see* the cards ... and of course "leaks" would be *intentional* ... we have see this M.O. before.
;)
as far as the "power consumption" goes ... it could NOT be *extreme* since DAAMiT has a SINGLE-slot cooler available [my opinion, speculation etc.]

what i am waiting for is to see how they squeezed such *incredible bandwith* out of a single "512MB ring bus" --compared with 1900 series ...

these are the *details* i want to see ... is it a single bus?
:Q

what clockspeeds, etc.?

and the x1800xt was a very nice GPU ... just over 6 months *late*

kinda like STALKER ... looked awesome 6 years ago ... released this March 22nd ... it looks less so today
PREY started out in '97 ... unbelievable gfx ... still stunning today ...

when thing are *late* you lose perspective ... i don't think r600 is late like x1800 --considering the merger and AMD's higher standards [i hope]

The single-slot version will be the budget product - the thing that is to the flagship version what the GeForce 7300 is to the 7900.
