I can't believe this unit doesn't have analog audio outputs. I can understand why most consumer BD players don't include them because of the cost and the limited need, but for high end audio/video equipment like Denon, I would expect them.

I'm going to get dragged kicking and screaming into an HDMI capable receiver...but I'm holding out as long as I can. I hate to replace a fantastic receiver (Denon 3805) that serves me in every way except HDMI capability, just for that one feature.

I can understand omitting RCAs. If you have 1080p TV, you have HDMI. If you have a receiver, you have digital audio input. The problem with this unit is that it doesn't have digital audio out! No TOSLink OR S/PDIF so you either need an HDMI receiver or use your TVs digital out as a passthrough. Poo.

to be quite frankly all the hd stuff confuses me. still in low def and chucking along. probably in another few years when things settle down I will get everything updated to BD/HD/HDMI/etc etc goodies.

This.

very tempted to jump on the BR wagon, but reviews say that this player has hideously long transport/loading time.

They've been literally giving this player away in package deals because they can't sell it. Do not buy.

Rio Rebel: check the prices on the Panasonic BD80 these days.

Everyone else: as I noted in the AVHT forum, Electronics-Expo has the BD60 for a bit under $250. Use coupon code "ONLINECAT20" to get another $20 off. Or, just walk over to Costco and get it (well, they call it the 605 and include a HDMI cable) for $230. This is the best basic player.

Why is it a good deal if you can buy PS3 for $350 and someday even for $300?

I personally wouldn't get a PS3 as a bluray player for the following reaosns:
Heat generation/Stackability
Fan noise
Doesn't play well with universal remotes
Poorer audio output than some stand alone Bluray players

What a coincidence - I was an early adopter of a Panasonic Blu-Ray player. 😉

While I agree that this unit should have optical and/or coax digital audio out, neither of those can pass HD audio like TruHD or uncompressed PCM.

My whole point is that this isn't Sanyo or Philips...this is DENON. This is a company who prides themselves on producing a higher quality device to support a market segment willing to pay for that quality. Joe 6-pack doesn't give a rat's ass if the Blu-Ray player has analog outputs, but Frank Audiophile very well may be concerned.

Some of us are willing to pay for higher quality, but we're not willing to replace equipment ever couple years when a new technology comes along. Companies like Denon have historically supported us.

That explains it.

I think you got it backwards. Does Joe 6-pack represent Denon's higher quality seeking market segment? That would be Frank Audiophile, who has an HDMI/TruHD/DTS-HD capable receiver/SSP, that doesn't give a rat's ass. Of course, Frank might expect that his gear be feature-rich considering the price premium he paid...

Joe 6-pack would be the guy who's scratching his head over why he can't plug his new $384 BD player into the receiver the guy at Best Buy told him was future proof when he bought it 5 years ago.

Evidently Denon is turning its back on us.

FTR, PS3 is an outstanding value as a BD player. It does run a little hot, but unless you live in a cramped studio with a bunch of other electronics running it shouldn't be an issue. Fan noise is negligible to me -- I don't hear it when I'm watching a movie or playing a game. Universal remote is easily remedied with the $15 Nyko IR remote, so long as your remote is programmable. Audio should sound just fine if you're using a receiver/SSP. If not, it's going to suck no matter what BD player you use. I paid $280 off CL with 2 controllers and the IR remote. That's a pretty damn good deal for a BD player that loads very fast, puts out a beautiful picture, and also happens to be a kick-ass gaming console (actually TWO kick-ass gaming consoles, being PS2 compatible)! It's also an SACD player to boot. And potentially a Linux box.

If by poorer audio you mean it doesn't bitstream HD codecs, that's not poorer audio. That's exactly the same audio, the only difference is that your receiver won't light up the DTS-HD or TrueHD logos. A couple extra blinkenlights does not make the audio better.

Everything else is spot on, though.
