I'm getting tired of seeing dell coupons every week. Why not just lower prices?

I agree.

Anyways... u're a little late. There was a coupon that gave 750 off 1500 today, but it was used 15000 times in about 1/2 day. That's amazing to me, dell sells friggen fast...

Because people (such as myself) will think they're getting a HOT DEAL just because it's a huge coupon.

Economics. It's the same reason you see coupons for cereal and other groceries.

All these people who bought a laptop with the coupon, are on the end that will only buy when the computer reaches their price point. Then there are others, who will buy the laptop regardless if they have a coupon or not. Therefore, they now have a broader market - people who will pay regular price and people who will pay only if they are given discounts.

It's simple microeconomics. I believe rebates also fall into this category.

If Dell lowered their price forever, not many people will buy thinking that people can buy whenever they really need. instead, if there's a huge coupon available for a day or so, even if there's not a real requirments, people will just buy...

It is also all about ACCOUNTING... accounting smoke and mirrors.

For a company's stock to appreciate, the company had better show a growth in SALES (expressed in dollars). At a time when computer and computer component prices are continuing to fall, it would be harder and harder for Dell to show a growth in sales if they dropped their prices by half.

SO they price the item at the higher price, insuring the growth in sales. The coupon discount, and especially the rebate coupon, are charged against sales expenses in a different part of the financial report. You stimulate sales (expreessed in number of units) by charging a low effective price, while still getting credit for a groth of sales $$$$.

Rebates are an expecially good deal, in that as many as 35% of rebate recipients never bother to file for the rebate. That is a win-win for Dell. They get both.

the only way to tell if you're getting a hot deal with a particular coupon or not is to figure out which system you want and then go and configure it during several different deals. then compare the fluctuations week to week. for all i know, dell raises the price during those $750 of $1500 coupon sales, so that after the coupon is applied people are spending more on a computer.
