New Dell computers, their "price protection" useless unless you know how to use it

I recently ordered a Dell 4600 computer from Dell Small Business.
The computer came in yesterday.
Today I received a 15% off coupon and noticed that the same system includes a $200 rebate, instead of the $100 rebate on the system I just received.
A savings of a bit over $200 if I ordered a few days later.

I called Dell and asked about price protection.
Representative said, "yes, we offer 30 day price protection for the same line item system."

Here's the catch, same line item means EXACT same system, not only hardware configuration but everything else as well.
This means that if everything is the same except the mail in rebate goes from $100 to $200 then that line item is changed and the price protection is void.
Silly, yes? All Dell has to do is make a different mouse, or keyboard standard on a system and they do not have to guarantee price protection.

After discussing this with the rep for a few minutes I said, "fine, I'll just return the system and order a new one."
She said all I would have to pay is Dell's shipping, which was zero since I got free shipping.
Then she put me on hold for about 10 minutes.
When she came back on she said she spoke with the returns dept and they are offering me a $200 discount if I keep the computer.

I said, "fine" and that was that.

Pretty sneaky, huh? They won't do anything unless push comes to shove.

So, if you ordered a Dell system, remember you can return it and order a new one if prices drop radically. If you get free shipping all you'll have to pay is return shipping, which if $50 is still not much if you can get a discount of $200 or more on a new system.

Also, I learned that the return department is authorized to issue discounts up to $700 depending on the system.

Just thought I'd share my experience and save someone a headache!

based on my experience and many threads from others:

1) send the computer back for a full refund
2) build your own and never give Dell your business or recommend them again.

bargaining with the CSR can usually get you something extra unless you're buying a $250 after 3 rebates system. my friend bought a inspiron 300m and he felt that it was too expensive and wanted to return it. he called them up and the CSR offered him a $50 discount and an extra battery as well as an extra power adapter.

heh then he kept that sexy little laptop

Based on my experience and threads from others, Dells are a great way to go if you do not have the time to build your own.

I build my own, but have also had several Dells.

per website and magazine reviews as well, their customer service is generally accepted as poor, along with their tech support, thier products are...well...you get what you pay for.

Everything in this world tends to be "you get what you pay for".. If I were to recommend a brand name PC to someone -- chances are it would be Dell also..

I've had better luck with Dell machines then with other vendors. The hardware seems to be better and the prices are nice. The home machines I've bought through them are still running strong years later. I work with HP/Compaq and Dell business machines in a hospital environment and I still think Dell has better hardware. However their support is very poor next to HP in our environment.

Our families experience- about 6 Dells all together, all work great and were good bargains, and use excellent components. Only failure was a Western Digital hard drive that failed a few weeks after two year warranty expired on my niece's Dell 4100, Dell sent her a free replacement even though warranty was over.

Only real complaint was it took a long time to get all of the rebates on my brother's 8250 system which was from the crazy education deal last year, but he did eventually get them all.

As far as price protection, the particular $200 rebate the OP is talking about is for a very specific system, there's nothing unreasonable about not giving a price match to everyone who bought a 4600, but as he said they did so anyway in effect, or actually even better than that since I assume he's still going to get the $100 rebate on top of the extra $200 they gave him.

I recently got a Dell 400SC for $325...no way I could have put together a system that cheap myself. As for customer service...a friend of mine dropped his Axim and shattered the screen. He called Dell and explained what happened, and they sent him a new one with essentially no questions asked. I have had some frustration with their CS at times, and some joy, but all-in-all I don't hesitate to recommend them. As for quality...they pretty much use all name-brand components, with the exception of case and PS I guess, but those seem to be of pretty high quality depending on the model you choose.

ok, i have to admit, i'm ranting! i'm in the middle of an issue with dell, they charged my card after they cancelled an order...it takes them two weeks to fix this kind of a problem. they admit it's not uncommon for it to happen and their looking into it.

you're right, i too bought a 400sc and i don't know how they can deliver it to my door for that price...i have three dells and have not had a HW problem except a SBLive card was a piece of junk.

However, calling Dell for customer service is a different story, at times i think they took the government model to new heights!

i pretty much don't like dell anymore...
they are just like any other big built to order company now...
just do it yourself and save money...

-------------------------------

granted their bargain line.. is a bargain...

Explain how with legit OS and comparable parts with Intel platform.

They use Intel motherboards, ATI cards, Micron ram etc.

I agree I rather build but its hard to beat their deals.

i know this is going out of the subject but a comment. I work for tech support (not for dell) another company, and sometimes the deal or help or what you get free or not depends on the person you speak and how you speak to them. If someone calls in with nice calm manner explains the sitituation i pretty much will help them to my best and if they need something probably send it free.
if you come on the phone right away complaining you just make the conversation worse and probably get less.

As for Dell i have few systems no issues yet looking to buy that PowerEdge 400 server looks hot also for the price.
