New DDR installed....

I haven't installed any RAM in recent history, but i've done it before and i figured it was just a pop-it-into-the-slot sort of deal. Anyway, i jumped on the 1GB GEIL ddr 400 module, anyway so it arrived today and when i boot up my computer with only it in the first slot, it loads up to my Desktop then BSD! Does this mean i should RMA this thing already?

Are you sure your mainboard can handel a 1gb stick at that clock rate?
Some system specs would help.

Ahh of course, I have an Abit kv8 max-3

AMD 64 3000+

Currently i'm running a kingston value-ram that is running at the same speed ddr3200 but it is 512mb, i used to run another one, but i'm pretty sure that one is defective, while running both sticks i would crash all the time while playing games, and with just the one stick i have crashed maybe one time in a week.

try running memtest86 with the 1gb stick for several hours (like 8). If it turns up any errors, the ram's bad.

alright i guess im going to have to try to run that test...

Is it possible to load Memtest on a CD? i mean i know thats one hell of a waste of a cd lol, but i don't have a floppy drive, and if i do load it onto the CD can i start the program off of it?! Thanks!

If you just unload all the memtest files onto the cd, yeah, should be bootable

your problem is that the mem controller of your processor does not support mismatched dimms, so you can run the 512 or 1 gig but not both. the venice core fixes that, as well as running 4 dimms at ddr400.

There's a bootable Linux CDROM ISO you can download with MEMTEST86 on it. Just burn the ISO and boot to it....simple.
