Based on the recent article published in Science...this is a project to map the internet.
Seems like low CPU, low bandwidth.

Anyway, there was no Anandtech team, so I created one.

http://www.netdimes.org/

Latest Beta available from here: 0.4 Beta (I've found the beta MUCH more stable than the "release". YMMV)

Team membership is done through the website, not through the client. Login to the website at http://www.netdimes.org/login.php, and then you can see the page with User, User Index, Password/retype Password, email, and a drop-down for team. Pick us! ("Anandtech")

Actually, it has been done in the past by private companies. And it created a lot of mad admins.

Aside from giving a good feeling, running the DIMES agent will also provide you with maps of how the Internet looks from your home (currently) and will (in the future) provide you with a personalized 'Internet weather report' and other user-focused features.
I would give me a "good feeling" if it showed me that some one was going to run a high-speed net connection out my way "(in the future)". :D

You should be able to both at the same time without any impact on each other:)

I'll give it a whirl alongside F@H. It acts up and it's gone though.

If its really low CPU, ill try it out a tiny bit.

EDIT: Ok, that was easy. Its running pretty well, and not taking up anything but extra CPU time.

Maybe he just doesnt think that the aim of the project is worth his CPU time.

EDIT: Anandtech had now reached #38! Woodie has been credited with 217 measurements!

There is a space when you register a new user, or you can login on their website and enter any team.

Weird. Is that from the website login? It presented me with a list of all teams and an option to make a new team.

Also, we have the most members of a team below #12 (WWSETI), every other team is only 1 or 2 members. We have 3. :p And the potential of the entire TeAm.

EDIT: At the login page (login.php) has this for me:

User: *username*
User Index: xxxx (for me it is 1083)
Password: ________ (only if changing)
Password again: ______ (only if changing)
Email: xxxx@xxx.com
Team: [list of team names] (create a team)

_______

The program keeps crashing on me. I'll open the detail screen and after about 3 minutes, the program closes itself out.

Weird, maybe your java needs to be reinstalled. Ive seen issues like that on the NetDimes forums.

The last time someone was probing the internet is pissed off quite a few admins. Pinging and tracerouting indiscriminately can be quite annoying, and it's kind of rude.

Half of the internet is behind NAT devices, you can't map it.

EDIT: Monkey mistake.

n0cmonkey- I see your reasoning in that.

If the project gives me any trouble, then Ill dump it. But it seems to be working fine for me now.

EDIT: We have now reached #36 in teams.

I have gotten credit for under 2h20m of work.

This project seems to be low CPU, high bandwidth. So if you have bandwidth limits on your broadband (like total transfer per month), this could use that up very quickly!

I'm on dial-up, so it's useless to me.

Ken_g6- Do you think this is high bandwidth? I guess it may be, but not enough to make my connection noticably slower. Ill check my network activity.

Hmm... Its only spiking my network activity to .05%, but that still would be about 50% of a dail-up connection, if my math is correct. (.05% of 54Mbps is about 50% of 56Kbps, right?)
Also, that happens about every 15-20 seconds, so it is using alot of bandwidth. At least I don't have a limit. This project seems to be going relatively well for me.

I found the "stable" version would disappear after about 5-15 minutes. I've been running the beta on one machine all afternoon, it seems more stable. ALso, the beta has a "prettier" graphic. :)

I can't say that I'm convinced on this project...need to see what the CPU/bandwidth use is. (only 384K up, so probably not a big deal). I haven't found a service install, but I haven't spent any time looking for it. Maybe Monday.
