"The new Xbox experience will require 128MB of free space. A hard drive is recommended for the optimal experience, to take advantage of some new features, and to be able to enjoy the great movies, TV shows and games available on Xbox LIVE. While we expect the majority of consumers to download the New Xbox Experience without a problem, a small percentage of Xbox 360 owners do not have enough memory to accommodate the update. To help ensure all Xbox LIVE members are able to download the New Xbox Experience and enjoy its new features, Microsoft will be offering storage solutions to the Xbox LIVE community. We are not sharing details of this offering yet. Be sure to check xbox.com for more details in the coming weeks."

There you have it. The NXE is a required dash update, will need roughly 128MBs of storage, a HDD is recommended AND (shocker here) for those who own little or no 360 storage, Microsoft will be offering some sort of "storage solution". We wait for more info ...

Yeesh. That puts a damper on those buying the Arcade this holiday. Eats up half the memory card immediately.

256mb is the base, they also have a *gasp* 512mb version! Only $50 too!

They have 512MB cards available but they only put a 256MB card in the Arcade bundle. They are ridiculously overpriced though (surprise!). It's a shame you can get an 8GB thumb drive for cheaper than a 512MB 360 memory card.

Yeah and you paid an extra $100 for 100 GB extra.

Not saying you're stupid or anything, just pointing out that storage for the 360 is very overpriced.

Unless he hopped on the Dell 299$ deal =D, but it's true that the storage is overpriced =(

its sucks for those with arcades but maybe Microsoft will be generous(yeah right) and offer some time of memory card adapter letting you use SD cards. Beyond that I have no clue what "storage solutions" they have beyond just sending arcade/core owners free 20gb drives that they have left over.

They wouldn't do that. They may offer 512 cards for free or maybe a limited time discount on 20gig drives, but there's no way they'd give out 20gig drives.

I paid extra for the maximum storage available, an HDMI connection (I bought mine on the release date when the other 360s didn't have HDMI), and because it's black. I don't like the cheesey white look. It doesn't match the rest of my equipment. :p

this all goes back to MS' biggest fuck up this generation - not making the HDD a standard.

Well that and RROD and no Wifi

IMO none of these things were dealbreakers for MS. RROD sucked but they extended the warranties and (hopefully) fixed the problem on the new systems.

See that's part of the problem. People let Microsoft go for a long time with the RROD problem. Consumers lived with it so Microsoft was ok with it until FINALLY they did something about it. It should have never been a problem in the first place and they should have fixed it in the first revision of the console. Consumers showed that you can release a low-quality product and people will still buy it.

ehh not really. They did it to keep costs down. PS3 is doing the same thing now by removing BC and other features.

but regardless of the version of the ps3 you have, it is required to have a HDD to work.

I agree with ric, not having a HDD standard isn't that big of a deal. Sure, it's odd that they made it a must-have feature with the first XBOX, then took a step backwards by making it optional, but it's not a deal breaker for the console.

Those of us who know the benefits of a hard drive will buy at least a Premium 360, and those who who don't know the benefits of it will probably not ever be the wiser. All those people know is that they saved money, regardless whether they will have to spend money down the road for more storage in the form of the hard drive itself or a new memory card.

Besides, Sony pretty much had to put a hard drive in every PS3 to offset the slow-ass blu-ray drive, otherwise we'd be suffering PSP-like load times on our PS3's.

At least make the HD affordable. I need more space (20gb version) and cant condone shelling out 150 bucks for a 30 buck drive.

I was actually thinking about picking up a Arcade to play a few games, but I'm not sure now. Even with half the 256 card used up is that still enough room to save some games? Honestly I don't care about Live, or Download content. I just wanted a cheap 360 to play a handful of titles.

I just got in on an Elite for $299 deal with free 1600 points card last month. I found a 10% off coupon for the site that I got it from but when it got rejected I decided to not push my luck and miss out on the deal.

 for me.

Of course, that pretty much ate p my "entertainment" budget for the remainder of the year so I only have the games that friends are willing to let me borrow for the time being, but whatever.

I have a feeling that it's either this option or that they are giving everyone like, 1GB of online storage space.

The reason I'm feeling like it's going to be an online thing more than flash drive support is that the ability to use flash drives will not only open up security holes to modders and hackers, but reduce their income from selling memory units. HOWEVER, I can't imagine that the memory units are such a big seller that it would matter all that much to them.

And it also costs twice as much as the 360 with no hard drive... so going back to what ric1287 was saying, it kept costs down for people who don't need it. And there are a LOT of people who don't need it. People who have no broadband Internet can get by with the Arcade just fine, so why pay more?
