New Crucial RAM not working so well.

I can't be 100% certain it's the RAM but I am having issues recently.

First of all my original thread is here.

Cliff notes are I had one of my 4GB crucial ballistix sticks of RAM go bad.

Got the new ones in and tried to set the timings/voltage in BIOS. If I set it to the 4 4 4 4 12 and the 2.0V, my PC wouldn't boot. It would reset my CPU overclock also. So I left it at whatever default timings are??? and left the 2.0V. I can boot with my overclock now but COD:W@W crashes after 15 - 20 minutes play time.

BTW I contacted Crucial last night about the timings and they told me the timings aren't guaranteed if the CPU is overclocked. Is that right??????

Should I run memtest to check out the new RAM?

Any other advice?

Is memtest the best tool to see if your RAM is good or not?

I tried to run it and it froze about 24% into the run.

I noticed something else that I wanted to ask about in memtest. It said

RAM 562 MHz (DDR1125) / CAS 5 5 5 18.

My RAM should be DDR2 800MHz. Why would it list 562 and DDR1125???

I remember the lady at Crucial said my old RAM probably went bad because I only ran them at default speeds. She said they should be overclocked. I just want to make sure this RAM is configured correctly.

It seems I have lost my 3.0GHz overclock as well. The only thing I haven't tried is to reset my BIOS back to all defaults and start over. I have a strange feeling my processor is not doing as good as it once did.

I'm gonna try memtest again but hopefully someone can chime in and help with soem of my questions.

Crucial is the one guaranteeing the speeds, why would you doubt what they told you?
Next trip to the memory store, remember these names... Corsair, G.Skill and Mushkin
I'd also make a mental note to buy DIMMs that are rated to run at JEDEC standard voltage for the type... DDR2 = 1.8-1.9v DDR3 = 1.5v

Sounds like your "tech support" had been smoking some ganja before her shift.
Configuring RAM correctly would mean running it at default, not overclocking it.

Technically, yes.

Yes, you should, with new RAM especially.

Memtest86+ specifically: http://www.memtest.org/
HCI Memtest for heavy-duty testing in Windows, particularly if OCed: http://hcidesign.com/memtest/

DDR2-1125...sounds like you've got it set to a very high ratio.

You need to learn how to set your RAM ratios, as it sounds like you're letting the BIOS do AUTO.

You should be looking for something that's 2.00...in Gigabyte BIOS, that's 1:1, which means your RAM runs at the same speed as your FSB.

To be testing stock, you'd need to put the CPU to stock (8x266) with RAM @ 3.00 (2:3), which would put it at DDR2-800.
Have you set vDIMM to 2.0v aka +0.2 in your BIOS?

to answer some of the questions:

The lady at crucial said that the RAM has to be run at the timings, voltages they are spec'ed for, not default. She said I shouldn't have bought ballistix if I didn't want to overclock. Not overclocking would make them go bad. Even though I told her they lasted over a year (probably close to 2).

Anyone, not important now. I just want to set everything to the 4 4 4 12 and 2.0V but still keep my CPU overclock. Is setting things at 4 4 4 12 and 2V considered overclocking?

n7 I ended up backing down my overclock and it ran memtest all night, no errors.
I can't find any 1:1 in the BIOS. And yes, I definately have it set to 2.0V.

I did see something that was System Memory Multiplier and set it at 2 but then it changed the Memory Frequency to 533 instead of 800. I didn't leave it at that because I want to make sure it's what you were talking about.

I lowered my CPU speed back down to 2.4GHz. and the RAM is not at the 4 4 4 12 and 2V.

So, how do I overclock the RAM? Just want to see what I can get out of it and test everything so I can decide whether or not to try and go back up on my CPU speed.
