new CPU

I need more power, right now Im running a 3200+ venice, 7800GT CO ed, 1 gig of ram looking at getting another). What CPU should I look into getting? I do a lot of gaming, movies, music, multitask, etc. Any suggestions? I'm not lookin at spending like $1000 though, trying to pay for school too. Anything under $500 or so.

Athlon64 X2 3800 Will be the most commonly suggested thing most likely for those tasks,

My suggestion however would be to get an Opteron 170 and Overclock it.

x2 3800 or single or dual opterons. Dual core is better for multitasking. The single core opteron usually overclocks higher and is better for games.

X2 3800+ will be perfect for what you do, but around here everyone just loves the opterons because of their high potential (and mostly true) overclocks, low voltage, and higher quality silicon (used in servers).

definitely look into getting a dual-core opteron, unless they arent in stock or the price is a bit higher than a X2 3800.

You could always overclock your 3200+ venice first, before you decide you really need a new CPU. Unless you are running at 800x600 with your 7800GT..a new cpu won't give you much boost in games. If by multitasking, you mean you are doing multiple CPU intensive tasks at once, the X2 will be a huge benifit. If you are running mostly non-SMP aware tasks, or your multitasking consists of browsing the internet, while listening to music, then a dual core won't really be worth it. What is it you are running, that you aren't getting the performance you want?
