New CPU running hot

Hi, I just put together a PC for my brother.

I used an athlon XP 3200+ @200mhz, a http://www.xoxide.com/zacncpuco1.html" CNPS7000A heatsink[/url], and arctic silver 5.

I booted to the bios screen and looked into the PC health status, and the CPU temp soon worked it's way up to 49 degrees Celsius, rising by a degree every couple minutes, before I shut it down.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with this setup shouldn't my temperatures be much lower (note they were still rising when I shut it down). I would get some software to try and get a more accurate temperature reading but it doesn't have an OS and I'm worried about it rising too high in the time it takes to install windows. Case temp is around 30c btw.

49C on its own isn't so bad. However, if this was without any stressing of the cpu (ie, just idling), then you can worry. A couple of things could be issues here. I've noticed at times the BIOS will actually have your cpu running at 100%. Not sure why this is the case, but have noticed temps going to the same as at full load, as opposed to idling. Try checking the temps from windows.

Mainly though, I'd be checking how much arctic silver you used? If you used the whole tube, then you'll be doing a lot more harm than good. You only should use the slightest amount, just enough so it can spread across the cpu.

Along with what degrader said....
Don't get too worried within bios unless your getting into the high 50's and climbing and set your thermal shutdown temp. Check for newer bios revisions. Different bioses can read temps all over the place.
I always go ahead and flash to the newest official release with every build.

As long as you are sure the HS is installed properly run your install, Thermal shutdown will protect you if it gets too hot.

i installed one of those hsf setups once and the fan wire go stuck between the die and the hsf it got real hot, thats what it sounds like to me unless you are in a hot room with a closed case with bad airflow that is

Lol im running with an SLK-947U on a panaflo L1A with Antec reference compound and i still idle at 53C. I suppose most of its due to my ambient temperature being around 78-80F. Your fine as long as you dont zip on up to the high 70's... the ya gotta worry.

Well I went ahead and installed windows and it reads 49c from Windows as well, while idling.

It's an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard so I dunno what that mobo's reputation is for reading temps.

It's a basic Coolermaster Wavemaster case, so the airflow should be fairly decent.

I just used a dab of arctic silver, but I suppose it could've been too much.

I realize the zalman isn't a high performance overclocking cooler, but I expected the temps to be much lower than this.

Ah then dont wory to much about it. Thats the same board im running on. I would be willing to bet its a bit higher than it actually is. What is your ambient room temperature?
Also how many case fans do you have?

The case is a coolermaster wavemaster, 2 front intakes and 1 rear exhaust.

Although 30C is actually the motherboard temp the bios are giving me. On the setup I run at my house, my MB temp is 28c and my processor idles at 35. On the one I built for my brother the MB temp is 30c and the processor idles at 49c...

Only 2 degrees difference on the MB temp but 14 degrees difference on the CPU temp.

My friend has an HP system, and his 2200+ reads 68' C in the BIOS, his system is perfecly stable, if you're not overclocking, don't worry, AMD chips can withstand quite a bit of heat, we're talkin up to 80' C

yea i normally idle around 50C. nothing to worry about. until you start nearing 70C under load i wouldnt give it much thought.

Are you looking at the die temp or the socket temp?
