I have a good question... should I go for the 100 or 200 series. Originally planned to get a 165 or 170 but now wondering whether the 265 makes more sense.

If you plan on using it for a work station, going for a 265 now, then adding another later is really sounding like it makes a lot of sense.

It's just that the prices listed there have caused a *lot* of headache, as a lot of people mistake those prices with the MSRP, then get upset with us retailers who aren't charging that price. What they don't realize is that our wholesale costs can be MUCH higher than those.

I just want people to realize that those prices are great, but they only apply to huge builders/distributors who buy them at least 1,000 at a time, directly from AMD... and I don't think any of us here fit under that category :D

No worries.
Was talking to Dave, he said he was the one who tipped TheInq. off to the pricing changes.

Wish AMD would distribute in smaller-than-1000 unit quanities, eh?

One thing to remember, most dual socket mobos do NOT allow for any OC'ing (like mine)

part of the issue is the sites like newegg, zzf and monarch know how desires..do you think the read this stuff...so they know demand is good so they can get more

the problem is the smaller reseller can not get their prices because they probably buy in lots of 100's maybe even a 1000 in some cases or more..so they get better prices

eventually prices will drop again..but not so long as well continue to have such a strong demand....the enthusiast market does drive newegg, and others pricing...not AMD IMHO

persoally I feel for Dave/Tankguys..hard to compete in many cases and give such great service and assistance to us and make a reasonable profit since there costs are higher...I will pay more to get information like stepping and help these guys rather bigger online sites

Yeah the pricedrops on the Opteron 2xx Series are quite nice as the drops on the Opteron 8xx, 2 pricing tiers lower for both Opteron 265-280, Opteron HE 260-275, Opteron 865-880 and Opteron HE 860-875. So if you wanted to buy an Opteron 270 before you can buy an Opteron 280 now with the same money. :p

Also the Server version of Athlon FX 55, Opteron 152 has now droped down to 637US from 799US which is also a nice drop.

Looks like Monarch must have bought quanty of 1000 Opteron 144 @ $111 a pop to sell in a combo for only $130

Edit
It's now $150 for the 144
