Pick up a Core 2 Duo E6300 and a Gigabyte S3 motherboard. I hope you still have budget for DDR2 as well.
E6300 is $190 on newegg but cheaper on forums. I have a couple for sale ;)
Motherboard is $109 on Newegg so it all basically evens out for you with much better performance and overclocking potential.

edit: beaten by a couple mins it took me to type it out lol

interesting to see that intel has the upper edge right now.

so, this cpu and mobo setup would be the best in this case scenario??

im not big on gaming but there are times when I do play and this should be fine I take it.

also, will this be just as easy to setup as a amd and asus mobo, which is what I built in the past??

Please... Please... Don't build anything until you've done more reading on newer CPU's, MB's, video cards and memory... Please!

Since you say x2's are cheaper than c2d's x2's must be cheaper right? so in that case getting a cheaper cpu isnt a bad choice

the cheapest C2D outperforms the most expensive AM2. both require the same DDR2, go for DDR2 800. $100 or so for any good mobo.
