New CPU = Instability

I've just installed a brand new 2000+. Now my system is unstable. It sometimes freezes - just like that.

I set it running 133/133 - correct right?
The temprature is 50 degrees celcoius. The frequenzy is 1676MHz (shouldn't it be 1666MHz?). The voltage is 1.65V.

All measurements made by MBM 5.

Any ideas why my system is unstable?

That's just the question - I ordered a Palomino...

STUPID as I am I didn't write down the serial number BEFORE I mounted the CPU so.....

why?

One more thing - might help you:

In the command prompt I write "set" and get the following info:

Family 6; Model 8 (TBRED???) stepping 0; AuthenticAMD

Ordered a Palomino and get a Tbred?? W00t. Where did you get it from?? :D

IF it's a 6 8, then you're using a tbred. Your temps are kind of high for a tbred. Can you confirm my findings to make sure that it's a tbred?? :D

You swapped out the CPU and replaced it witha new one and the system hangs periodically? What OS are you on?? Mobo??

I'm stupid.... I plug in PC-100 memory and complain about the computer being unstable..... :(
At least I think it was PC-100 memory.... not sure. I unplugged it and I'm now testing...
The fact is I ran 100fsb before.... now it's 133.......

Anywayz - I bought it from a store here in Denmark - just a regular store. What's the big catch on getting a Tbred instead? As far as I can understand from info I got at Toms Hardware the TBred isn't faster than the Palo.....???

AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (running at standard speed)
1 x 256MB PC-133 (after unplugging the unidentified one that is...)
ECS K7S5A with cheepo OC BIOS (newest version)

I really hope it's the mem.....

You plugged in a pc100 RAM in hoping for PC133?? Some sticks might work but you better make sure that it's PC133. Other than that, I don't see why your pc should hang after swapping the CPU.

The Tbred are easier to overclock and it's much cooler than the pali.

yeah i know
i was just saying, when you installed the cpu (if you did yourself) did you notice the stepping infomation/product code on the core (on the raised part) or on a black sticker with white letters beside the core(raised part) somwhere?

No I didn't see anything when I mounted it (except the "2000")... My intention was to make a scan of the cpu... but I forgot (been having a rather confusing day so my brain is worn out....)

Easier to OC.... hmmm I read an acticle on toms hardware and they couldn't OC the TBred as much as the palo.... confusing ???? The overall impression I got of TBred after reading that article was actually not so good.... Pitty I can't remember which article it was... Maybe I'll find out later....

Anywayz the computer runs without any problems now so it was the old memory. I've always had it installed but I've never been running at a higher fsb than 100.

My temprature is:
idle (windows XP): 49-50 C
Full load: max 53 C

Room temp is 24 C

My cooler isn't really the best ever but it's free..... It's an AMD cooler originally shipped with a 1900+ palomino (that one WAS a palo!!).

The temps are still kinda high for a tbred. Might wanna check the air flow or clean the case a little. :)

The tbred won't o/c as much as the palo which is true because the palo can give an overclock of as much as 500Mhz or more. The Tbred can o/c to a HIGHER speed which is near 2ghz and beyond. You should try overclocking your's. :)

usually the invisble wall hit by many is around 2ghz with the tbred a

for the freezing, how the hte +5, +12, +3.3v lines at idle and under load?

I have actually tried to OC a little - right now it runs 1835MHz. I don't think I will keep it that way though - my CPU cooler sucks, that's the reason for the high temps. The case is open at the moment - 49-50 C idle.

Unless.... I've thought about using a plastic hose to suck cool air (from outside the case) in to the CPU. Maybe that will help a little? I know that Intel has used that solution before.

I know the article on THG you're talking about. I was surprised to see that. Maybe they were using a bad stepping? I dunno... buy from everything I've heard, T-Breds overclock easier, and run cooler with the proper cooling (copper heatsink)

Happened on my older computer too.
It probably doesn't properly detect the TBred CPU.

I had to put my old pally back in.. no choice in the matter.. the mobo company even told me so.

Maybe the same problem the P4 crowd sometimes has......Bad power supply? Since the new CPU may ask for more power than the older one, it is possible you are having greater demand than PSU trunks can supply. :Q I have a friend who exchanged processors, unplugged fans, spare drives, ect., only to find his 400 watt PSU wasn't really 400 watts.
