Is it worth trying to get a stock phenom x6 cooler to use on my x3 450? I notice that it has heat pipes and was wondering how much better it would be than the x3's stock cooler.
I might be able to get one for free from someone that upgraded the stock cooling.

Definately an upgrade in cooling... Are you overclocking the X3...? I have a 740 X3 BE and it runs quite cool even with the stock unit and OC`d... Put an Arctic cooling A64 on it and it wont even break 45C full load @3.8Ghz... One less core means 25% less to cool...

Yeah I have the x3 running at 3.6Ghz. It is tough to find a better heatsink that will fit on my motherboard.

The best bang/buck on market right now is:
hyper 212 for 15-20 or so
Mugen 2 for 40 (yes bit more but it rivals some of the best)

I am going to go with the big shuriken after hearing of success of other people with my motherboard thanks for the replies.

Definitely a good choice. I just put one in my HTPC the other day when I changed cases. Just be careful with any RAM heatsinks with stuff sticking off them. On my board, it just clears the top of the two sticks, which were in the slots closest to the processor.

Edit:

I just got a SG05 with a Sandy Bridge mb, and wanted a cooler and more silent solution for the i3 than the stock Intel heatsink. I decided on a Zalman 8700, because I am pretty sure it will fit and with the FanMate, I can always turn down the fan to reduce noise.

Nothing wrong with zalman but I prefer to have a use replaceable fan if the need arises.
