New CPU ... AMD or Intel?

My Tbird 1800+ finally seems to be running out of steam ... running at a "lowly" 1500MHz, both AMD and Intel now have CPU's running at 2000MHz plus at reasonable prices ... so it seems like it might be a good time to upgrade. I've always been an AMD fan as their price/performance ratio has almost always kicked Intels butt (doesn't hurt that I used to work at AMD either!). However, it seems that now the Intel CPU's are much more favorably priced and may actually be a better deal; for the same price as a Tbred 2400+ running at 2000MHz I can get a P4 2266 that actually runs at 2266MHz AND has a way faster FSB speed. It also seems that the P4's run quite a bit cooler and thus require a less aggressive cooling solution and a more quiet computer.

What are your thoughts on AMD v. Intel right now? Also, any recommendations on mobo's for either CPU? I'd like lots of PCI slots, on-board LAN, USB2.0 and Firewire, and Serial ATA support. RAID and sound aren't necessary.

You're 1800+ is a XP and what is it your doing that it's not fast enough for? Don't forget that for gaming a new vid card will net the best performance boost. If you just have the upgrade itch or, perish the thought, computer envy :Q😛😉 then stick with your own instincts and pick components from brand makers you trust and try to taylor the components to best address your computing needs since AMD and Intel both have different strengths. caught me! ... i really don't "need" the extra speed, but i'd like to get a true 2.0GHz CPU and get the faster FSB speeds. heaven forbid my box doesn't have some of the latest and greatest in it!
 
LMAO 😀 Hey one junkie can spot another from a mile away! 😉 Happy Holidays and get the P4 then but get a 533fsb 2.4B or 2.26 then.
 
Get AMD, with the nForce 2 is a great chipset, and none of the boards in the Intel world have really shown themselves to be that great (IMHO). The small differences in performance from each CPU won't make that much difference, but a good motherboard can make or break the whole deal.

1800 XP is just fine, going with a 2 Ghz cpu will not make any difference in the real world. use the money and buy something else !!!!!!! (LCD, digital camera, PDA, wireless optical mouse, wireless home network, oh wait. these are my xmas wish list, hehehe)
 
Get an Athlon 2400+ (going for $170+) and a nForce 2 mobo... I've heard reaching 2.4GHz with the 2.0GHz 2400+ is not difficult to do, and when you pit a 2.4GHz Athlon against a 2.53GHz P4, I think I know which one I'd go for.
 
If you want a really responsive system, also consider a 15000rpm SCSI drive such as a Cheetah 15k.3. Pair it up with an Adaptec 19160 and a terminated cable and you'll be cookin' with gas 😎

seriously, tho, i think you're right - better to put my hard-earned $ towards something i'll have more fun with ... i'm thinking, video card?!

A good video card or more RAM...mabe a nice sound card + speaker combo...wait...a nice aluminium casing...the list goes on...

Heck, bottom line...u hv already a fast CPU..spend on something else. 😀
